IBM 3101/3278 Term Emul
5 messages in this thread
I need an IBM 3101 or 3278 Terminal Emulator module for Diga!. Was there
ever one written ? Do any of the other Telecom programs support IBM 3101 or
3278 Terminal Emulation ? Does anyone know the Office Vision VM Commands
that are underneath the Function Keys on these Terminals so I could fake an
Emulation with the Standard Diga! VT100 Emulation ? Am I full of questions
or what ? Thanks! Russ

I know of no IBM 3101 or IBM 3278 emulators for the Amiga. The only way to
go is to use VT100 emulation on your Amiga. Preseumably the protocol
convertor you use to hook up to your mainframe supports a VT100.
As far as mapping the function keys is concerned, you don't really want to
map the function keys to the Officevsion commands as the function keys will
then only work with Officevision, no other applications. Consult the
documentation on your protocol convertor to find out the key mapping for
the 3270 PF keys and then use that to remap your function keys.
As an example I use VLT on my Amiga emulating a VT100. It is connected to a
Hydra protocol convertor. The Hydra maps the VT100 ESC 1 to PF1, ESC 2 to
PF2 etc. So I have remapped the VLT function keys to send ESC 1, the hydra
remaps them to the 3270 PF key control codes and the host application
thinks the PF1 key was hit.
Hope this makes sense, good luck.

Thanks for the reply Martin. When I connect to the Host with the VT100
Emulation that came with Diga the function keys do nothing whatsoever. In
fact the only way I can get off the Host is to drop the phone line. What is
the "VLT" you mentioned in your message ? I dont know if I can get the
keymappings from the Protocol converter because then I would have to tell
them that I was using my Amiga to log on with ! Thanks Russ

VLT is a very good VT100 emulator for the Amiga, it is free and should be
available here in the CompuServe libraries.
VLT was developed at SLAC where I understand they use it with IBM
mainframes all the time. You can easily redefine the function keys with it
and it has a couple of nice features that you can take advantage of when
connecting to an IBM mainframe. The 3270 terminal has 24 function keys, the
Amiga only has 10 so it becomes kind of hard to map all the 3270 function
keys. VLT solves this by optionally displaying function buttons on the
screen which you can click instead of using the actual function key. VLT
also provides buttons for the 3270 clear, ins keys etc. In addition VLT has
an ARexx interface which I find very useful for automating operations.
I know nothing about Diga so can't help you there but I would recommend you
check out VLT for mainframe access.
As far as getting the VT100 keymappings are concerned there is probably no
easy way around that, I guess all the PC and Mac uses are using other
terminal emulations. Try mapping F1-F10 to Esc 1 – Esc 0 and see if that
gives you PF1 thry PF10. If that works I can give you the rest of the codes
I am using. If not try and find the name of the control unit or protocol
convertor you are using, I might be able to look them up for you.
