I'm having a problem involving the use of Professional Page 2.1 and the HP
Deskjet Plus printer. I'm trying to print a legal sized brochure, but the
output is always cut off at about 10.25". On your help line, Mark James
told me that I could probably find a PD driver to deal with this condition.
I haven't found one on CompuServe. Do you have any suggestions?
May I take this opportunity to make some comments about PPage 2.1? I would
r e a l l y like to see more Compugraphic typefaces made available.
Ideally, these would be obtainable by individual type families, not mixed
bunches–I don't really need Courier! I'm looking for Gill, Futura…the
works, basically. I want to use the program on a "Professional" level, but
for me, at this point, it's not there. Also, I'd like to be able to
STRETCH the type. Gold Disk should check out some examples of up-to-date
typography–maybe design or music magazines–and try to match it.
Why is the display stretched vertically?
Except for the above gripes, I like the program.

Don't forget that using MIFONT, you can use Adope Type One fonts in
ProPage.
Could you tell me about the quality of the output from MIfont-converted
typefaces? I was concerned that since, as I understand it, MIfont
generates Amiga standard bitmap font and .metric files, these would not be
as good as the structured outline CG fonts. As usual, promotional
information has left me feeling ill-informed.
Also, I have seen verbiage on-line regarding bugs in MIfont. If you have
had experience with the ProPage-MIfont setup, I'd be interested in hearing
about it.
Sorry, I have not had experience with MIFONT. But I have used POST with
Adobe Type One fonts successfully. So my ideas is:
Get the type one fonts you want.
Use MIFONT to make the bitmaps so you can use them in ProPage.
Save the file as postscript and print it from POST using the true
Postscript Type One fonts.
The only thing you would need the MIGRAPH fonts for is WYSIWIG in ProPage.
If I have this wrong, someone please jump in and help.
(This is not experience of mifont BUT from what I have seen online here I
would expect first rate customer support from MI.)

MIfont _doesn't_ create bitmaps from Type-1 fonts. It creates bitmaps from
Mac screen fonts which often come with Type-1 fonts.
There is a "PD" utility which _will_ generate bitmaps (metrics and atc's)
from Type-1 fonts … called mkbmap, mkmetric and mcatc.
To use MIfont you need to have the Mac screen font available. You also need
to have the PostScript Type-1 font file available … either locally, so
that ProPage can donwload it to the PScript printer, or have it already
resident in the printer. You also need to have the AFM file available.

As the author of MIfont, perhaps I'm the guy you're looking for.:) MIfont
will convert any Mac PostScript bitmap screen font into a standard Amiga
bitmap font, plus create a PPage metric file for each font. Naturally,
these are not scalable outlines like CG fonts (though PPage will scale the
bitmaps on the fly to whichever pointsize you call for). As well, it will
convert your Mac OR IBM Type 1 fonts into a pure ASCII downloadable format
that PPage can send to your laser printer automatically (Uusing the
"Download Fonts" function in PPage). There are also extensive font
management functions built into MIfont for handling thousands of standard
Amiga fonts. There is a review in the Dec/91 issue of Amiga World which,
unfortunately, was written before the most current release (1.1c). ALL of
the bugs they describe have been fixed. We also have another program
(MIoutline) which converts Type 1 outline fonts into PDraw outline fonts.
Let me know your setup and I'll tell you if MIfont will help you out.

Thanks for getting in touch with me. Here's my configuration: Amiga 2000
with 3 meg RAM and a 105-meg hard disc; printer is an HP DeskJet Plus.
Where can I find a list of typefaces currently available online?

If you want to use PD typefaces with MIfont, your best bet is to look in
the DTP forum or MAC forum. MIfont only converts MAC bitmaps, so getting
IBM fonts won't help you much with MIfont and PPage. For commercial fonts,
you'll need to go to a Mac dealer and ask what they have. And then you'll
need to figure out some way to get the Mac files onto your Amiga (Amax,
Mac-to-Dos, etc.). We are also making the Adobe library of bitmap screen
fonts available for about $5 a disk in quanity (971 screen fonts so far),
already on Amiga disk, ready to be converted with MIfont. There's a viewer
here on CIS that we created; can't remember the name of the file. Just do a
keyword search for "MI" in Word Processing/DTP. If you use these Adobe
bitmaps, you'll, of course, need to purchase each corresponding printer
font from Adobe, or if you use an output service, they'll have the printer
fonts there.
