Max document size?

New Horizons:
Does the latest update of ProWrite offer better suppport for large
documents? "Large" is a relative term, I suppose. I tried to adjust the
margins on a thirteen page document using "Select All" and the sliders on
the ruler. Each time I adjusted the slider, the document took roughly one
and a half minutes to update. Pretty darned annoying, eh?
Does "QuickWrite" do better? I really don't need multiple fonts, just
good text manipulation, headers & footers, and a decnt spell checker. BTW,
nice thesaurus. I expect to produce documents exceeding eighty pages, or
around twenty if I break the document into sections. The document size is
critical, and all the sections need to have identical formatting.

QuickWrite is somewhat faster than ProWrite on global formatting for a
couple of reasons: (1) It is faster at calculating line lengths since it
does not have to worry about multiple fonts, and (2) it doesn't have have
"undo" information stashed away since there is no "Undo" in QuickWrite.

The amount of time it takes to reformat a document is really more dependent
on how big your paragraphs are. At least I believe that is the case. I
just made a sample 14 page document that only takes 19 seconds to reformat
a new margin setting.
I just tried another 14 page document with larger paragraphs and it took 1
second less to reformat. Maybe it's the total number of paragraphs that
matters, anyway, 20 seconds is not bad for a 14 page document and besides,
you shouldn't be making that many global changes after a few pages are
knocked out.

To give you something of a standardized document, I tried changing margins
on a text copy of the U. S. Constitution — 18 seconds each for left and
for right margins on a 15-page document, on an un-accelerated 2000.

I am now the owner of a brand-new copy of ProWrite3.2, which I
purchased for full price down at the local Amiga dealer, just to be nice.
It certainly does seem to update margins adjustments a lot faster. A
lot faster than 1.5 minutes, at least!
