#HARD DRIVE ADVICE

I NEED SOME ADVICE ON PURCHASING A HARD DISK FOR AN A500. I HAVE A501 TYPE
EXPANSION AND AN EXTERNAL DISK DRIVE. WHAT EXACTLY DO I NEED I AM LOOKING
FOR A BUDGET SOLUTION.
THANKS ANY ADVICES GREATLY APRCIATED
Jonathan,
I suggest the GVP Series II A500-HD+. It is a snap to set up, is fast, and
is available up to 105MB HD storage. I am using one in my home computer
(82MB + 4MB ram.) You can fit up to 8MB ram in it and I've received
excellent tech support from GVP. Not sure about current pricing, I paid
around $950 in June. If that sounds steep, I justified the expense knowing
GVP's reputation for turning out reliable/solid gear.
Hope this helps.

Jonathon,
I do not have a hard drive yet for my A500, but having made similar
inquiries here most recommend as large a capacity drive as you can afford.
There are some tempting 20MB deals out there but it would be full pretty
fast– most that responded to me were recommending at least 50MB, even 100
or more.
Keep an eye on the Classifieds section too- there are often drives being
sold.

Jonathan,
I recently added a HD to my A500 in the form of an AD-IDE kit from ICD
along with a 52meg Quantum drive. This kit replaces your internal floppy
with the HD and makes your external drive DF0:. This setup works great,
saves desk space and, best of all, can be had for about $350.00. Once you
have a HD you will never miss the second floppy.

Dennis,
Concerning the AD-IDE kit from ICD, when the kit replaces the internal
floppy drive, what happens to that internal drive?? Does it come out of
the A500?? If so, is this easy? And how easy for the average person is it
to set up the HD kit?

Kurt,
The internal drive comes out when you install the kit. The Quantum drive
is the same size as the floppy and fits in it's place with no
modifications. I found the kit very easy to install. It took me about one
hour to do and I had never had my A500 opened before this.
