Hey Guys and Gals: FYI, tonight (Friday) on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw at 6:30pm we have a 3DS animation playing!!! It was a quickie using a Humanoid model walking past a house, and we got Autodesk credit on the show (even if we didn't get mentioned!) Check it out, it is during a piece they did on forensic animation used in the courtroom, specifically for the OJ Simpson trial. Cool! Greg Pyros

Greg, Caught the animation (and the credit line), looked great. Congratulations! What did you think of NBC's beta of Apple's QuicktimeVR? Someone told me that they had seen a VR using photographs on the Today Show, it sounded like the descriptions of QTVR that I had read. The actual thing was even better than I had imagined it. Their setup with NBC is going to be a PR coup for them, especially when people learn that the technology is going to be free (like QT). I have the feeling that they are going to incorporate elements of it into their future GUI, also. Seems like a natural output format for 3d systems, perhaps you could get format specs from them for a R5 output option? Scott

There's actually a company who already makes a QuicktimeVR clone that runs under Windows and it loads 3DS cubic-environment-map files. The company's name is Warp, and they're in Sausalito (Eric Gullichsen, and I think the number is 415/331/6203). – G

>>NBC VR… I saw the piece on the Today show, an it looked to me like it was simply panning around on one large video image, perhaps digitally formed from a series of frames from different angles. I didn't see the nighttime thing. A friend told me that he saw part of Alec Jason's original Mitchell brothers animation on the (same?) show (with an Autodesk credit). JKJ

Hey Scott, If you get hold of Gullichsen, give him my regards. I haven't seen him since my days in Austin, Texas. While we dined one night at a local restaurant, I interviewed him for some public relations work I was doing in the area of virtual reality. A most interesting meeting. The subject matter was way over my head at the time. I was awestruck by the concept and dumbfounded by the terminology. Most memorable part of the interview: I asked him how somebody gets started in the field of Virtual Reality. What did you do before this? I inquired. "I sold vacuum cleaners," he said. <Giggle> We worked on getting a model of downtown Austin created by CADStudio (now PROFISEE) up and running as a navigatable environment for a high tech fair put on at Austin's DISCOVERY Hall. The hope was to *FLY* through downtown Austin. We learned a lot from the experience. If you chat with him, ask him if he wants to *GET INVOLVED* in the work we are doing. He's a rare bird. <GGG> SEE YOU, Kevin "Well, this kind of flying has always been here to be learned by anybody who wanted to discover it; that's got nothing to do with time." – Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Greg A 78 year old woman came into the coffee shop the day after and told me she had seen it and thought it was "neat", no kidding! Don't have a TV myself. Congradulations. TedB !^NavFont01F0007MGHHG90F7FD
