But you *did* say that you had no problems running the software-only
version of STACKER on your notebook, right? Just wondering, as my new AST
notebook came with a 60Mb drive – just big enough for now, but definitely
too small for next week! <g>

STACKER is just dandy. We also just got an AST Notebook, and did just what
you're contemplating. I would recommend it highly (sorry CADalyst) <grin>

Does Unerase in DOS 5.0 or in Norton Utils work with stacker? That would
be the deciding factor for our office.

What part of the Norton Utilities would you want to use? STACKER converts
the HD into a "larger" volume, so any utility reading sectors via DOS
function calls (as both DOS 5.0 and NU do), should work just fine.
Brad's been hogging the AST Notebook, so he'll have to answer with any
first-hand experiences. (hint, hint Mr. Ek).

Jake – how do Norton's File Locate and Text Search work on STACKERed volumes?

Just fine. There might be a semi-noticable slow done in operation, but
nothing you can't live with.

The bad stuff is that STACKER will slow down disk operation, a little, if
not used with the STACKER coprocessor board. The other bad thing is that it
isn't free <grin>

PCTools V7.1 Unerase works w/ Stacker. Don't know any reason why the ohters
wouldn't also.

I feel I should jump into the thread a this point. I'm in the process of
doing a review of Stacker for CADalyst. I doubled the eensy-weenie 40 Mb
drive on my Everex Tempo notebook and have subjected the poor thing to all
the kinds of abuse (Speed Disk, Caching, Norton TS, etc.) that I would
assume an unsuspecting novice ( You know the kind… If a little knowledge
is dangerous, some people are lethal.) could throw at it.
I am running ACAD rel 11 (I have 5 Mb RAM and a CoPro) and FoxPro 2.0 doing
some serious database development. Aside from a small decrease in access
speed, I can say that in the 6 months I have been testing it in this
application, I have not had a Stacker related crash. (People who program
database API's can cause some phenomenal crashing!)
I would not recommend you slow down a speedy hard drive in a desktop, but
in the portable computing environment, it is indeed a God Send.
