#AutoCad/Mac

What does Autodesk consider to be the fastest Mac hardware configuration
for AutoCad R11/Mac? Given the large number of variables – new 68040 CPU's,
cache cards, video cards and a variety of monitors and accellerators like
Tokamac and the Radius Rocket – I'd be interested to know which of these
variables Autodesk feels have the most beneficial effect on speed and
performance, and what the "optimum" configuration would be today, since I'm
about to add more workstations.
I'm way behind with my own Mac technology – so I'll let the heavy-duty
Macaroons answer you – if they can. I'll just say that, I think,
Autodesk's job is to try to keep all hardware vendors happy. If Autodesk
were to annouce that a particular configuration worked better than another
or, saint's preserve us, that one platform was better than another, the
abuse from all other vendors would be, let us say, unpleasant.
In any case, it sounds like you have a handsome budget – so I'm sure we'd
all like to hear what you end up with.

Your best investment on an AutoCAD accelerator for the Macintosh would be a
clone 483-33 sitting next to your Mac. <g> After that, I would suggest
that you get the Mac with the fastest clock speed (like a Quadra 700) to
lower the regen times. A Radius QuickCAD will fix redraw times to a
non-issue rate.
Autodesk stays away from bench-marking. Cadalyst and Cadence magazines do
timing comparisons; sometimes they acknowledge Macintosh.
Good luck!

Have you run MacAutoCAD on the Quadra? If so, does it hurt? Or is it a
Good Thing?
I've had a few inquiries, but I don't even know what a Quadra looks like.
No, I haven't run AutoCAD on the Quadra. I suspect it is somewhat similar
to running it on the Radius Rocket 68040 I have in my Mac IIx, which yields
reasonable performance in some categories, slow in others.
I thought AutoCAD on the MAC was not System 7-savvy. Since the Quadra only
runs System 7, that would leave out the Quadra as an AutoCAD platform until
a new release. Am I wrong about the System 7 problem?
