#Amiga Radio Spots!!
37 messages in this thread
Help! I'm having the big one (huff, puff) – call a doctor! CBM just gave
me a heart attack!!
I just heard a radio advertisement for the Amiga – a good ad, IMHO!!!!! It
was not holiday oriented, it was not nebulous and oriented to Ninetendo,
games only etc. It was a simple ad with a straightforward message: Amiga,
high versatility at a reasonable price. And it gave an 800 number to call
for a local dealer location.
The style of the ad was similar to the Saturn car ads. It was specifically
a radio ad and not a sound track for a TV ad. One minute long and quite a
refresshing departure from any previous Amiga ads.
BTW, it didn't even mention CBM – just "the Amiga computer" and "the Amiga
line of computers" and "your Amiga computer dealer". It was aired on KTWV,
a fusion jazz, light rock, and new age music station in LA.
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area Commodore has been running a very funny
radio ad. It starts off by saying "We have heard that radio is a great way
to reach ONE PERSON AT A TIME!"
Versa,
Thats the one…
Makes ya wonder if its the same company – I had to check the logo on my
computer's chasis to be sure ;^}

An ad is also being played here in Dallas on KOAI 106.1. I haven't heard
it, but another person working here heard it Monday morning. Maybe
Commodore's marketing department is starting to shape up under customer's
pressure? I might just write to Commodore and cheer them on for this.
Keep up the ads, Commodore! I'm behind you 100%!

Darin,
I beleive there is an official CBM support person in a forum somewhere on
CIS. We should shoot him/her a message too!
wmc
I'm sure that having messages shot at them would be a welcome change from
the bullets <grin>.
Keith
The CBM support can be reached with GO CBMSER. Greg Givler is running that
forum now.
Betty
Thanks, Betty.
I'll look up his PPN and leave him a message.

An ad for my favorite computer on my favorite radio station?! Wow!
I really miss "The Wave." There is NO such programming in Hawaii! And
now it's running Amiga commercials too! I think I'll call them and
see if I can get a tape!
Richard,
I am too far away form LA too – I get it off the cable! I like Amy Hyatt
and Night Tracks the best. Well, actually I like Musical Star Streams the
best, but they moved it to mid-nite on Sunday nites so I don't get to
listen to it very often. :^{ wmc
Wayne, Hmmm, guess I'll have to turn on commerical radio every now and
then. I normally listen to an all jazz, no talk "station" that comes in
via my cable TV service.
Steve,
I get this station by cable too. I'm in near the hamlet of Santa Barbara
too far from LA to get the station directly.
wmc
This is good. Now, if they put it in a wide market, and follow it up, maybe
we'll get some reaction. Then again, maybe not. They waited an awful long
time.
Ben
Ben,
As a developer, a letter of appreciation and encouragement to continue and
intensify might have some weight. You might find the ad on a Boulder
station. Its a long way, but can't you radio dudes work the skip? Neat ad
– you should try to hear it.
wmc
I'll give a listen for some of the Denver stations… we can hear them on
AM.
Ben
Ben,
You'd get a kick out of the one asking president Bush to give 40,000 –
50,000 Amiga's for Xmas to the "Government Family memebers" in place of
fruit cakes. Great ad – simple message in a funny context.
wmc
Do something USEFUL? Nahh, no chance. Fruitcakes for gov't employees…
how… _appropriate_.
Ben
-> Do something USEFUL? Nahh, no chance. Fruitcakes for gov't ->
employees… how… _appropriate_. -> ->Ben
Ben,
I know some gov't employees who would be happy to accept Wayne Cole
76370,621's fruitcakes! Would you be the Christmas turkey, … oops, bring
the Christmas turkey! :->
All seriousness aside, Leah Wesolowski 72700,2604 in charge of the NASAU
Beach newsletter would be the one interested in quoting your rebuttal to
Amiga World that I asked you about on AmigaVendor.
Sincerely,

Yeah! I have heard one of the Amiga radio commercials twice today on KTXQ
102.1 (Q102)! It's the "Dear Person 1, We at Commodore have heard that
radio is a great way to speak to someone one-on-one. Well, let me tell you
about the Amiga. Blah blah blah. Dear Person 2, We at Commodore have
heard…". Cute commercial.
I think that it's GREAT that Commodore is doing some good advertising. I
would like to propose a letter to Irving Gould and Mehdi Ali from the Amiga
community. Please sit down and write them, expressing your support and
appreciation for their great ad campaign. Don't say "Oh, other people will
do it. I won't." Then it won't get done. Come on, spend a piece of paper, a
29 cent stamp, an envelope, and a few minutes of your time to write
Commodore. In AM-Report number 118 (in LIB 4), Gould and Ali asked the
general Amiga public, "How can we better market the Amiga in North
America?". Keep up the ad campaigns and don't return the prices to their
previous levels after Christmas, are my suggestions.
Come on fellow Amiga users! Write them! Trust me, even though some of us
don't hold stock, we still have a voice in large enough numbers. Write
them!

Actually, a fruitcake for gov't employees would be a nice piece of
recognition at our end!

Good stuff. My wife told me she heard an Amiga ad on the radio here in
Seattle the other day. Also…. I noticed a 1/2 page newspaper ad in
todays paper. B section, listing the 'good' attributes of the computer and
listing all local dealers. Good stuff!
–jp–seattle–
Maybe I'll buy an L.A. Times to see if it runs in the paper there too.
Could it be? Finally, the beginning of a credible ad campaign? Hopefully
they don't wuit after the holidays. With this type of campaign I believe
it will take 4 months to be able to tell the effect. Hope they give it at
least 6.
wmc
Yep, got it on San Francisco's biggest AM talk station too, it's a start.
Two people said "Hey Paul, your computer is on the radio! You really aren't
the only one that has one.!
Good grief, ya gotta smile…
Paul
–pt–not seattle– 😉
At least they know its your computer! Heard in on FM Yuppie Mood Musique in
the SFBay Area.
Margaret,
"FM Yppie Mood Musique", was the KBLX or KKSF??

They are running a CDTV ad on TV here in the Dallas area.
Betty
What TV channel in Dallas are they running CDTV ads on?
Darin, SPC Technical Support
I'm pretty sure I saw them on channel 5. Since I only watch 4 and 5, it
had to be one of them. I saw the ad several different times, but always
the same one – the one in which the TV says they'll never call it a "boob
tube" any more.
Betty
They are running a really good CDTV ad here in the UK on ITV (although I
don't think it's all regions) and Channel 4. I've seen it a couple of times
now. The only sad thing is there are no shops (at least here in Oxford)
selling the darn thing 🙁
There's also supposed to be an A500 ad, but I haven't seen that one.
Tim.
Betty,
I was staggered to find CDTV mentioned on the front page of our local,
midwest newspaper last week, albeit in an article describing CD-I.
But I nearly threw my breakfast dishes at the wall when I got to the
part that "Commodore does not sell its CDTV machine in Ohio, but might
after January, a company official said."!! One of the biggest dealers in
the midwest has been selling the thing for months just south of here!!
Idiots. They don't even know what dealers they have or what they carry.
Some things never change. (BTW, the article also said that CDTV doesn't
support Kodak's Photo-CD format, which it does, but that could have been
the usual journalistic ignorance in force.)
Admittedly, you could count on one hand (several times) the number of
CDTV's this dealer has sold, but there was quite a run of interest after
the article. Unfortunately, it was by people who knew it was there and were
ribbing the dealer for selling stealth technology.
Karl
(I took a short trip down to General Dynamics last week, but wasn't there
long enough to look you up again. Hope you, hubby, and Aftican violets are
well.)
– via Whap!
Karl,
You know, and I know, that if Commodore let it out that they actually have
some dealers selling their stuff, they might sell some, and then they would
have to manufacture more to fill up the warehouses again – and all of that
is a lot of work!
The violets are doing quite well, and I'm doing OK. But it is with great
sadness that I must tell you that I lost my husband on Nov. 5. We did
enjoy your visit the time you came out. I hope you will be able to come
again.
Betty
Betty,
I'm so sorry to hear that. Obviously, I didn't have a long time to spend
with your husband, but he seemed like a very friendly and likeable sort.
I'm sure I can't imagine how it feels to now be living without him. I hope
you're finding ways to cope as well as possible, and I'll be thinking about
you. Next time GD blows up some equipment, I'll be sure and stop by.
Take care,
Karl

Sounds like you should get on the phone to talk to the reporter directly…
I'm sure they'd run a retraction, if not an article about all the nifty
demos you could show the reporter. Most papers are starving for local
color stories. Go for it! Just think of an 'angle' that you could
spoon-feed the reporter – you use your Amiga to model a house you'd like to
build, you use it to make video titles, you model the surface of Mars, etc.
John,
Unfortunately, I believe the reporter is probably still recuperating
from the verbal thrashing that the local dealer gave him and the paper.
Although it makes me chuckle, I'm not sure how productive that is, since he
undoubtably thought he was getting the straight poop from the Commodore
spokesman. Most journalists seem to be unaware as we are that most
non-technical people who work for Commodore must first pass a test to prove
that they are incapable of understanding market economics or how to run a
reasonably-sized corporation. A phone-call to that 1-800 number to find the
"Amiga dealer nearest you" didn't even have my dealer in it. Idiots.
Ahem. I should be more upbeat. They seem to be improving in the larger
sense with new Amiga hardware, the release of 2.04, licensing of the
chipset to a laptop mfgr., radio advertising, high-density floppies, etc.
So I guess I should be more patient.
And then the morons announce a Xmas price-reduction in the magazines but
don't work out the details with the dealers, so they don't have to sell
machines at less than their cost.
If they're improving, that's the right direction, but they have a long
way to go in the day-to-day running of things.
Disappointed that my beloved Amiga isn't better served,
Karl

Commodore has a full-page ad in the November issue of Computer Graphics
World — centered around the A3000. It uses the tag line "The Amiga Lets
You Make A Major Presentation Without Turning It Into A Major Production".
The system is referred to as the Amiga Presentation System.
-Chas (Very nice ad.)
Have seen that same ad in "Computer Pictures" (inside back cover,
October/November '91.)
