We're interested in adding CD-ROM capabilities to our Novell network. The
ideal application for us would be a way to somehow verify data entry
through the use of lookups on the CD. Typing in a ZIP Code for example,
and getting a City/State so it doesn't have to be typed in, or typing in a
telephone number and getting an address. Is any of that feasible
currently? Where does one go to find out more about the state of CD-ROM
industry? Or get a list of available databases? Or find out about
connections to a network?

There is a program called ZIPKEY by Mr. Eric (?) Isaacson that will do just
what you ask for (and more) regarding Zip codes. I use it daily in my
mailing business and am always impressed by its blinding speed and yet I do
not have it set to the fastest configuration. This is NOT CD-ROM based,
however but is updated several times a year and is therefore easier
(cheaper too) to keep current.
Let me know if you want the guy's info; I have nothing but praise for the
program, as it has saved me hours of typing and $dollars in mis-directed
mail.
P.S.: There is a shareware version (check B.B.S.s but although it sold me
on the program it is not as slick as the registered version).

If you are running Novell NetWare 386 3.11 then Micro Design has a CD-ROM
solution for you. We currently have the only Novell Certified CD-ROM
solution on the market. Our SCSI Express product will allow you to connect
a CD-ROM drive directly to your Novell file server and have the CD-ROM
appear as a standard NetWare mountable volume. All access to the CD-ROM is
handled through Novell's MAP command. For more information on our product

Which CD/ROM drives to you actually support with your product? Are
there any compatibility problems with other Novell products, like tape
backup units?
The only answer I can get from the staff is that it works with the
CD/ROM drive you sell and the tape back up you sell, but no guarantees of
it working with the CD/ROM drive we actually use (chinon) and the tape back
up that our client uses. What's the difference between the Toshiba and
Chinon drives, other than the price <g>? It's hard to justify buying new
hardware to support SCSI Express, yet we need a solution because we have
lots of clients with Novell networks who want to buy the disk we publish,
and I want to recommend (or demonstrate) a way that will work.

We support our own line of CD-ROM subsystems. The SCSI Express software is
setup so that if the CD-ROM drive is not one of our supported drives we
default to what we call generic CD-ROM support. With generic support we
should work with most SCSI CD-ROM drives. We can not gurantee that the
Chinon will work with our generic support but it should.
Our tape backup software is the same as Cheyenne's ARC Serve. Describe your
tape system and I will attempt to tell you if it will work.

Arnold, We bought your Laserbank 600 M/O drive and 1300 DAT drives. I had
to send the DAT drive in for repair last week. I've tried calling to get a
status of the RMA (#406) with no success at all (6 calls in 2 days). I've
had to purchase another DAT drive from someone else in order to continue
our work. We cannot go two days without a DAT drive and this was explained
to the person that issued the RMA. PLEASE have a knowledgeable person
contact me. 1-800-782-0778. BTW, I haven't recieved any news of updates to
SCSI Express DOS or UNIX since March.

I will have someone call you today in regards to your RMA status on the DAT
drive. In regards to updates to SCSI Express, there was a new release just
a couple of weeks ago. If you sent in your registration card you should
get notified.
