I am using a-talk 3 and I need to be able to start the program up in shared
mode to use the compuserve-b protocol. I cannot seem to figure out how to
do this. Is there anywhere I can find out how this is done?

I'm sorry, but I've never used Atalk III, so I won't be able to give any
specifics. Is there some sort of preferences or serial setup menu
available? That would be a place to start looking. My guess is that it's
something you need to set, then save your settings, exit, and restart the
program.
Perhaps someone familiar with the program could give you a more specific
answer. Also, sometimes it's easier to work through these things in an
on-line conference situation, where it's much easier to say "try this and
tell me what happens." If you still are having trouble, stop by when you
see that someone is in the CO room.

I have AtalkIII, though I rarely use it for CompuServe, but I do have it
set up to use the XPR B libraries if I want to. You don't have to open in
shared mode to do this. You just have to have the XPR libraries in your
libs: drawer and use the XPR menu item to access the external protocol you
wish.
Once I had the XPR libraries installed, my version of AtalkIII appended
those protocols to the menu. That is, I select 'protocol' from the
'Transfer' menu, and the xpr protocols are appended in a different color
from the other set, but are selected in exactly the same way.

I don't use ATalk — but I believe the way to run the program in shared
mode is to use a command line argument from the CLI when you run the
program — something like "ATalk SHARED". The info should be in your
manual. If not, you might leave a message about it in the New Horizons
section in AmigaVendor Forum (GO AMIGAVEND) asking about it — they are
now the publishers of ATalk III.
