Brian, I asked NEC a while back how to rig the CDR-83J for synchronous
operation so it could talk to my AHA-1542B controller faster. Their simple
answer: You can't. Also, they said that the drive is designed to operate
without terminators. That's why you can't see or get to any- it doesn't
have them! So, make sure your CD-ROM isn't the last device in your chain.
BTW, dip switch 4 should be set to "1" if you want to enable SCSI parity
checking. Finally, the 83J can only operate on SCSI 1 standard, but you can
mix it with other devices on the bus using the SCSI 2 standard- at least
with an Adaptec AHA-1542B controller. This is really useful, because the
controller off-loads some instructions to devices that support instruction
queuing, and speeds things up a bit. Hope this helps- I've spent a lot of
hours fiddling with this goofy SCSI stuff…

So you know if this SCSI parity check feature (related to a NEC CD-ROM
drive) needs to be enabled on the SCSI controller also? I heard someone
say that it is suggested for NEC drives (maybe this was you), but I don't
notice any SCSI parity check switch on my Trantor SCSI card (of course I
can find switch 4 on the drive).
Doug, I can't help you much on the Trantor controller since I have an
Adaptec controller. By default, my controller is set to enable SCSI parity
checking, but this can be defeated with a jumper. I figure a little extra
error correction can't hurt. I doubt if it is critical though, so if you
can't find documentation or get tech support to help you set it, I guess
you ought to stick with the defaults. Sorry I couldn't be more help…
