Rich, I saw the ad earlier Tuesday, and then saw a player in a store on Wednsday. I'm sure Kodak has a great product here, for professional use, but I am having trouble figuring out why people are going to buy the players. OTOH, Lisa talked to Kodak yesterday (Anybody in northern New England want to go halvsies on a workstation) and they claim the beasts are selling. So what do I know. I bought a Laserdisk and a beta VCR just because they were better<g>. Frank

Frank: The key to selling anything, as you know, is to get the ear of people who are candidates for the product. Kodak has – and can get -the ear of photographers. While that is a subset of the entire US consumer market, it is a HUGE subset. While the customers who will buy Photo-CD today are some professionals and classic early adopters and "gadget" collectors, even a 1% sales rate is a number in the 100K's. This is the problem I've had with the positioning of CD-I. I may know I'm a sucker for photography, but how do I know if I'm a "multimedia" consumer, or an "imagination" consumer? Those of us who have watched CDROM platforms come and go look at Photo-CD and say "Yup, there goes another one." But from the consumers' perspective, it is an interesting product because it is pegged to a large and identifiable interest area. Keep your eyes on the Photo-CD activity in your area, and let me know if the interest seems to be sustained. – Rich

Funny, but I went out and bought a 35mm camera this past weekend to have a sour source for Photo CD. After looking a the cost of projectors and slide film, it may have a chance, the alternatives are low res still video.

Bill: And one doesn't have to risk making a fool of oneself wrestling with the stupid projector screen! It's so public! At least now, when making a fool of oneself trying to figure out which little wire to plug into which little hole, one is huddled behind the tv, out of sight! Rich

Rich: If I may. I find Photo CD to be a wonderful new product and service. From a consumers point of view you can have your cake and it it too. Prints to send to the family and electronic images to be used for easy viewing and a permanent record. On a professional production level, photo cd allows us to use negs or slides for printed materials and is a low cost alturnative to high cost scanning for electronic needs. I am excited about thhis product. Harry Hallman ext

Harry: I agree. Not only is it well-positioned as a consumer product (amateur and professional), but, from my perspective with the OPA, I think it will raise consumer consciousness abuot the value of these little plastic discs for more than just music, and ultimately will do the entire industry a great deal of good. Enjoy! Rich

Harry: I talked with a really helpful product manager from Kodak whose responsibility is to make connections with publishers who may want to use Photo-CD for commercially-distributed products. Her name is Claire Donahue, phone 619/723-0509. You might give her a call to find out what kind of support Kodak can offer a potential developer. Good luck! Rich Bowers
