The key to selling anything, as you know, is to get the ear of people who
are candidates for the product. Kodak has – and can get -the ear of
photographers. While that is a subset of the entire US consumer market, it
is a HUGE subset. While the customers who will buy Photo-CD today are some
professionals and classic early adopters and "gadget" collectors, even a 1%
sales rate is a number in the 100K's.
This is the problem I've had with the positioning of CD-I. I may know I'm
a sucker for photography, but how do I know if I'm a "multimedia" consumer,
or an "imagination" consumer?
Those of us who have watched CDROM platforms come and go look at Photo-CD
and say "Yup, there goes another one." But from the consumers'
perspective, it is an interesting product because it is pegged to a large
and identifiable interest area.
Keep your eyes on the Photo-CD activity in your area, and let me know if
the interest seems to be sustained.
