Can anybody explain me differences of NEC CD-ROMs – 73, 74, 83, 84 ?
Sometimes they have suffix – (m). Seems to me that some of them are
internal, the others are external. What about speed and interface ?

ALL are scsi devices. 73 ext, 83 int, 74 ext, 84 int. The 83M and 73M are
the same as 84 and 74 respectively except the don't have the double dust
door. These drives have 280ms access time, 300k/s, 2 rca jacks, 64K
buffer, etc.
New CD-ROM will probably be announced at Comdex which is in 6 days and
counting. So it is much better to wait and see what comes out and how
pricing is overall.
Jeong, I have sold and used Sony and many types of NEC but reckon that the
CDR-74 is the best drive around. Unless desk space if really important I
suggest that you buy an external. Internals seem to suck dust and give more
problems. If you need to send it away for repair having an external is so
much simpler. Tom
