Greetings to all BETA testers of the 3D Studio renderer for SGI! I just wanted to let you know you are in the right place. I am looking forward to your discussions and reports during the SGI BETA period. Brian Rudolph Autodesk Product Support

Yo, I had "unclicked" this forum from OzCIS and had totally forgotten about it. So far this [SGI] stuff is working just fine (all the stuff said it is supposed to do and granted that it is just slightly faster than a Pentium 60). Any clues when I will be able to render through the Video Post?

<<Any clues when I will be able to render through the Video Post?>> Beta #2 has that included. It should have been sent out yesterday – overnight express. You might already have it by now. So did you run into any problems or potential issues getting the first Beta up and running? -Brian

>> So did you run into any problems or potential issues getting the >> first Beta up and running? Not really. I did have two problems but they were related to system configuration. At first my resolv.conf had a typo (came in like that) and it was not resolving names locally. That prevented 3DS/R to resolve localhost. I guess this is the first time I run an app that requires localhost by name. The second problem had to do with accessing the SGI from different computers. Those running PC-NFS had no problem. Some are running FTP Software's OnNet and for those I had to install PCNFSD on the SGI (my pcnfsd server is a Sun running on the same network). At any rate, the whole ordeal took less than 30 minutes which isn't that bad considering an Unix installation.

You were able to run using FTP's OnNet? Did you have any problems with file locking? Could you give the details on your non PC-NFS setup? -b

I run OnNet on the majority of my PC's. It's by far more flexible. The only oddity was that I could not get the [normal] pcnfsd located in the Sun server to authenticate those machines when attempting to mount drives on the SGI. I have never used the SGI as a server. I have two central servers and that's where everybody points to (including the Indigo2). When I installed 3D Studio and had my ~/3ds4 exported, the machines running PCNFS had no problem mounting it. The machines running OnNet, however, complained they could not get authenticated. I then installed pcnfsd on the SGI and everything went smoothly. No, I did not see any locking problems. At least no one complained about. All renderings went fine and worked as described. I'm just waiting for the Video Post rendering to work as that's all I do. Note that I'm not an "animator" per se. I run the most convoluted and diverse network possible. There are at least 9 different platforms running different OS'es all connected to this rat's nest I call network. It's actually pretty amazing everything works at all.

Gus, Sounds great. At least a rats nest network keeps you busy! <g> When you get a chance, could you post the version numbers, etc. of OnNet and the misc stuff you needed to get it running? We don't have it here, and I'd like to keep it in the database. -Brian

The current shipping version of OnNet is 1.1. The only thing I needed was setting up pcnfsd on the Irix. The source for pcnfsd is all over the place including in the distribution of both PCNFS and OnNet (with OnNet you get a CDROM with a quazilion utilities).

Gus, John's message reminded me, would you mind posting the SGI FLIC player utility here in the SGI BETA library? -Brian
