Guys, it's not that big a deal. Here's my experience (SBpro owner, non
SBpro drive.)
I bought the SPpro, and then considered the drive after. A good deal came
up on a sony drive, and so I picked it up. If you buy a drive from anybody
but creative labs, you need another controller card. No big deal for me,
but if you only have one slot left, you may want to think about it a
little.
When you buy a drive from creative labs, you get a special little patch
cord, which takes that audio tracks, and routes them through the SBPro. I
was suprised how difficult it was to get this little $10 cable, but
eventually, I got it. There is no "functional" difference between buying a
drive from creative labs or anyone else. I believe you should spend a
little money and get a decent one, but, that's up to the buyer.
If you intend on playing audio CD's or hooking the audio through the SBPro
(this is the normal setup), then make sure you ask the people selling you
the drive if you get the audio patch cable for the SBpro in the deal.
As I mentioned above, the creative labs drive connects to the SBpro, and
the SBpro acts as the controller. TO MY KNOWLEDGE, no other drive can use
the SBPro as a controller. (That's the way creative labs wants it)

I certainly have/had no intention of starting a fight. Sigh.
I also have a Non-CL drive, and an SBPro. I didn't have to buy any
special cables though. What cable do you mean? The audio out from my
CD-ROM is just two RCA jacks (left and right). I just ran that to the
Line
In port on my SBPro, which is a mini-jack. Thats a pretty standard
cable
as far as I know. And if I remember correctly, it came with my SBPro!

course, the manual says that Im supposed to use that cable to output to
my
stereo, but it works just as well this way. Is this the cable that you
mean, or is there another way of doing this that I dont know about?

The cable that Larry mentions, is a small cable that can run from the audio
out of an internal CD-ROM drive to the CD-Audio in on the SB-Pro. This allows
you to use three different inputs for the Pro. You can buy said cable from CL
for $6.

I guess CL must have stopped including that cable with the Pro… I double
checked, mine came with it.

I did'nt get the cable with my Pro. I had to order it from CL. I did'nt think
they included it with the CD-ROM. Still it's nice to get the sound in through
the CD-ROM channel.
