Happy modeling,
Dr. Pixel
Hi Dan,
Would you mind tell us your motivation for holding this contest?
John Ellis
Sure…
My main reason for putting the contest together… is to spot the best modelers
in the country. I've ad more tan a few requests for custom models and I want a
way to grade folks. This should give me a good way to refer some high quality
jobs out…
And I like to party, and the render day will be a big party…
Oops, just spilled some gin
Dr Pixel
Dan,
>> is to spot the best modelers in the country. <<
Thanks for your answer, I think you're on the right track but the stakes need
to be higher to attract the best, don't you think?
John
owe…
Yes, that may be. I'd like to keep this a cash even scenario… Hence the $10
entry fee. Mom says she may add some more prizes if we get some more people and
$10 entrys… All i'm going to get from my customers is more Studio sales…
(and that is very COOL) but I can't put too many awards in the mix by just
little 'ol me. Black box has been very nice to offer this level of help… Any
one else want to jump in?
As for the modelers, I was not expecting "all new" models. I felt that most
folk would pull a long forgotten .3ds file from some sub-dir and pollish it up
some. One guy tells me he won't enter "because he thinks he can't get a big
enough return"
I'll be he's fun at parties…
Dr Pixel
Well Dr.
I guess the entry fee thing is kind of a sticking point for many. Now I suppose
if you provided a CD with all the meshes on it to entrants with the
understanding that you would continue to sell the meshes for additional profit,
that might be a win/win. But as it stands you may be discouraging more
participation. FWIW I'm inclined to support your idea, its in the details of
implementation that things need a little work IMO. Believe me I do understand
time effort etc. So the question is how to make it attractive to everyone one
concerned. If there's a cost effective way to make it equitable, I think you're
on to something.
Profit, Recognition or Renumeration = Incentive
FWIW I would be willing to contribute my Porsche Shield to this but it seems
only fair that I'd get a collection of additional meshes in return. Its not
worth it just to compete, for alot of animators that is not an incentive. (Yeah
I know, hard to believe but they're a different breed.)
Just a little insight into the workings of an animators mind.
John

So let me see here… The best 3DS model winner gets 500.00 of old IPaz's and
you get 10.00 per entry plus all right's
to ALL the models to resale or use in your animation's?
I think something is burning.
Brandon
I've got a contest too. Send me your models, texture maps and $10.00. I get
all rights to you stuff. The winner Gets $50 cash chosen by impartial drawing.
If we don't get at least 10 entries the contest is off. No refunds No returns.

I've got a new contest. Better odds than the state lottery! Send me two
dollars, and I'll send you back one!

John
There's probably more to this than is in the contest anouncement! I think
what will probably follow will be a free set of cd's containing all the
entries! The entry fee goes to mastering and shipping costs!! really exciting!!
This will help standardize the look of everything and I can throw this D**n box
away and just go watch TV and drink beer.
Yea, I've got your mesh model right HERE!
Thanks Gary…
You are close to right on. We will be giving ALL of the models to the local 3D
Studio user group… (giving as in for FREE) The money will go to the cool
party (open to all…) and to get some dough for the user group. I think they
are a worthy cause…
St Pixel
Hi Don!
Well, Ill join enter yours if you will enter mine…
Will you be sending us a model and a check?
Dan
Sorry Dan, I'm strictly professional here, meaning, I only do this stuff for
hire. I don't enter contests and don't really feel what I do is what your
contest is all about. 95% of my 3DS work is special effects for video plus
flying logo stuff. I am not an artist, I am a video engineer and editor, who
occasionally shoots too. I work in 3DS as the jobs require it but as for fancy
modeling I generally sub all the fancy stuff out. Stuff like free form animals
and boats etc. Simple models I do here.
I guess you contest was not a joke but it sure sounded that way when you
introduced it. That's why others including myself responded with our tongues
in cheeks. Take no offense. We just thought it came across funny.
Thanks Don.
I got a little thin skinned yesterday. (it was my birthday) sorry.
As for the contest… You got it. Most pro's have some hidden away modeler who
loves that stuff. I want to find 'em. Most productions seem to find detailed
modeling the hardest portion of completeing a task. I'm looking for the best,
and we'll have some fun doing it.
Please let anyone you might think worthy in on the deal…
Dr Pixel, Fading like an old monitor.
Happy B-Day Dr!
Geez Brandon…
I'm giving the models to the local 3D Studio user group…
Will you be sending us a model?
Can't win if you don't play…
Dr
Dan,
>> One entry per person, $10 per entry …. All model entries become our
property <<
ROFL, I was just thinking yesterday about how much I missed your humour on the
forum. This is probably your funniest post to date. <G>
Yeah right!
DM
I notice he left out the part about the 1-900 number you have to call to find
out if your entry is a winner. Only $1.99 per minute , average length of call 8
minutes. <smirk>
Hi Bruce…
No 900's here. It's a real contest, and we need some money… To do it right.
PS… I hope you will send us a model…
Best of luck, written in 1 minute.
Dr
Dan,
Heh, heh, heh — You still simply don't "GET IT" , do you ?
By capturing the rights to any models submitted to your so-called contest you
remove all incentive to participate. Most of us smell a rat, and whether
through design, or pure innocent stupidity, it's your contest that is making
the stink, not us wise guys with the smirking commentary.
Bruce N. Goren
Gosh, Bruce…
You seem to smell a RAT. Well, OK… Don't enter. I'll guess you are a fine
modeler and we can leave it at that. Fair enough? PS, I need qualified
judges… Can you help?
Dr Pixel
> A $500 value of ipas stuff! <
The only problem is this: I would spend more than $490 of my time to build a
winning model. I don't even mind the fact that you would be making a killing
on entry fees and models — that's just good business!!
— James — Choreo Motion —
James…
You could send us something you did for fun… It is not ment to be a big
"gig"… But a $10 per entry, we could have a cool party.
I love to party with animals… (party animals…)
Dr Pixel
I've got 1000 models I'd like to submit, but that would make my entry fee
$10,000.
Could I have a discount and only send in $9000?
Thanks Jeff.
That is why we have a one entry limit. You can't stack tis contest no matter
how hard you try! Also note: Quality beats quantity anytime…
A hard choice awaits… What model will it be???
Thanks for the $10
Rich from models
