I am looking for opinions on the various new cd interactive media that are now or becoming available. It seems to be getting confusing for us non-technical/creative types. Which will become the standard? Which is better? Why? Can you help? Phillips CD I VIS by Tandy SEGA/NEC Kodak's CD PHOTO Interactive Any help will be appreciated. Harry Hallman

Harry: Are you looking for a platform to develop for? Perhaps I can help clarify a couple of things. First, all CDROM is interactive. The nature of the content and the interactivity is defined – within wide limits – by the developer. Some CDROM flavors live in their own special environments. The label "CD-I" is a trademark of Philips Consumer Electronics, not a generic description of some new capability of the medium. CD-I, VIS and Photo-CD have their own environments. In addition, VIS (when available) will play on a standard MPC (multimedia pc). Photo-CD will play on a wide variety of environments, as long as you have a compatible disc drive. Bias control: I am a notorious non-fan of CD-I. VIS seems a little better because of its play-ability in a pc environment also. But both have generated controversy over ultimate market acceptance (and a few other fundamental issues). My pick in this arena is Photo-CD. Kodak has done a lot of things right, and if this paradigm will work at all, Kodak will probably make it happen. Rich Bowers

** continued reply ** Sega and the game machines represent a big potential, but it remains unclear how accessible these companies will allow their platforms to be for other publishers. With the right information design, the simplified interface devices could instigate a real revolution in the access to non-game kinds of products. But the business issues will control. I hope this helps! Rich Bowers
