Thanks for the good information. I guess it would be most sensible to bite
bullet and go for the PS sim instead of turboing the CPU with a more
expensive accelerator although I heard CSA will be releasing a superfast
version of their new Derringer in Jan of next year which might be priced to
fit my pocketbook. You are correct; pagestream file take a bit of time to
print. I think, now that I'm thinking about it, I'll go for the CPU speedup
and enhance refresh (sloooow) and printing speed too!
I' be watching for your LJ4 printer driver!

Wish I could remember what I said <grin>
Well, I sold my IIIP and should have a LJ4 next weekend. Getting the 4
with an 8 meg SIMM and PS SIMMs. The PS might be slower in coming (back
order). Since I will have a 4 to play with hands on, will be able to make
some head way to getting the driver done. Much easier when I have a
machine to test on. Just ask the person doing the testing for my
III/PCL/PS+ driver! (how long until wb 2.1 gets released???)
I am trying to incorporate the TIFF compression in the driver. Running
into a few problems (read – bugs!). If I can get the compression working,
you should be able to do a full page of 600 DPI graphics with the stock 2
megs in the printer. If I can't get the compression going, better get
that accelerator and some more ram for the printer!
Did some quick testing with PPage sending PS output to RAM:. Sure a lot
quicker at finishing a print job!

I'm thinking of sending my wife to RAM:. I will be waiting with bated
breath for you to complete the lj4 (STOCK) driver. We use pagestream here
and think it is better for making ads. My AD won't use PPage. We send PS
files to ram: and then zip them from ram: to ram: – much faster. I have
gotten some good re-pro (clay coated) paper and am looking forward to
trying to use the LJ4 as a typesetting device. Really appreciate your
creating the driver!

Jon, the LJ4 (PCL) driver should be available now in the printer driver
section here in AmigaUser. Look for HPLJ4.LZH in the libs.
Just received the PS SIMM module, but not my 8 Meg SIMM module. Think
this would slow me down? No way, using PS with the stock 2 megs of ram –
just have to use 300 dpi mode. The PS module is smart enough to go to 300
dpi if you don't have enough printer ram. Talk about a major speed
improvement over bitmap (raster) printing in both PPage and FCII. Still
have to get used to PS!
Back to PCL (bitmap/raster) mode for a moment. Loaded up a 1024×1200 24
bit IFF (actually all grey scale) in ProPage and scaled it to about a full
page. Took PPage about 2 hours to print it at 600 dpi (running an '020 at
14 Mhz). Takes about 22 minutes to print the same thing at 300 dpi.
Printing it in PS (at 300 dpi on the printer) only took a few minutes
(can't remember any more accurate than that). Now have to learn how to
set density (lines/inch) for a half decent image in PS. FCII doesn't seem
to have a density/angle control for PS printing.

So you're a new LJ4 owner too? Welcome to the club! I bought the 4M
configuration, and have used it as a postscript printer. Have you been
able to print envelopes? I'm having ALOT of problems doing it with
pagestream (yes, I read the directions in the manual, but it refuses to
take the envelope in the MP tray, it keeps grabbing letter size paper out
of the paper cassette at the bottom!

Better answer your messages one at a time, or I'll forget what you said.
First of all, your welcome for the driver!
That MP tray takes some getting used to! In my playing with it on the
weekend, I have a fairly good idea how I want to use it. The two ways I
will use it are MP TRAY = FIRST and MP TRAY = CASS. Now, are you using PS
or PCL? If using PS (from PageStream) will it tell the printer it is
doing a specific sized print job, i.e. Letter, Legal, B5, Com10, etc? IF
so, then put the envelopes into the MP tray, set MP TRAY = CASS, and use
the Paper Size button on the fron tpanel to set the MP Tray paper size to
the proper value (took me a long time to figure out this last step!!!).
So if PageStream when doing a PS print job requests Com10 envelopes, and
you have such in the MP Tray, it should automatically pull them from the
tray.
It sounds like PgStream doesn't do this, so use the MP TRAY = FIRST
setting (not sure if you have to, or even can, set the paper size with the
Paper Size button in this case – to be on the safe side, set the MP Tray
paper size to the same as the PC – letter). If there is paper in the
tray, the printer will pull it from the MP Tray before going to the PC.
You have to do it this way for PCL5 (my driver), too.
Also, if you orientate the envelopes the same way as shown in the MP Tray,
you will get a smudged return address. Turn the envelope around 180
degrees and make the appropriate change in PgStream. The wrinkles are
much reduced compared to what my IIIP did, but one of the corners at the
bottom of the envelope gets a bit distorted/wrinkled. Maybe a different
envelope will not do this. More experiments…
Oh, don't practise on envelopes, could get expensive. Cut up some paper
the same size as the envelopes.

I think that PageStream is not only unable to define a number 10
envelope, but sets the printer to operate in letter size mode by default.
I have followed you directions when I first noticed this problem, but when
I ran the PgS generated file, the printer was requesting and looking for
letter size paper (when the MP was configured to envelope size, the
printer refused to take any paper from it, and chose the cassette at the
bottom instead)!
I haven't proof-read PgS' postscript output (I'm not too postscript
literate) but I STRONGLY think that PgS is the problem. Fortunately there
is a work around. I guess I'll have to leave a few dozen suggestions over
in the AmigaVendor area to allow defining common envelopes <g>!

So looks like you have to set MP PaperSize = Letter, and MP Tray = FIRST
to print Com10 envelopes with PgS. Just be sure to remove any additional
envelopes before printing the letters to go in them! <grin>
