Dear Charles,
I note your experience with the CDTV, Walnut Creek's discs and Asim-CDFS.
Even when using the filing system I am still unable to read the AB20 disc,
every time I pop it into the CDTV it goes GURU !!
Any help would be appreciated.
I have also seen mention's of a disc containing 24bit textures, any ideas
who the manufactures are ???

I just recently tried a number of CDROMS in my CDTV. No extensive
testing was done I just booted the CDTV off a straight 1.3 WorkBench and,
then poped in a CD.
Two disks from Walnut Creek, "Desktop Library and AB20 disk" resulted
in a Task Held Errors right after the drive accessed the disc. A suprise
was that two NASA discs I tried worked OK. They were Voyager discs 4&5.
Other discs that worked were the Xetec Fish and More collection and the
HyperMedia Fish disc v1.4.
Both the NASA and WC discs say they are mastered in the ISO 9660 format
but, only the NASA discs worked. Anybody have any ideas?

CDTV?

No the Walnut Creed CD's won't work but two NASA CD's I have work fine.
Not that I can do much with then on the CDTV. Just tonight I tried a
Network Support Encyclopedia CD that Novell sent me at work. The disc
mounted ok and, I was able to read some of the doc files. Couldn't run
any of the programs though as you might guess. Sometimes it had trouble
reading very large directories. I'm not sure why this should be.
Really wish the WC Desktop Library disc would work on the CDTV. I'd like
to lay back and browse through the books on my 27" TV. Rats! Oh well
such is life.

The CD mastering source that Walnut Creek was writing data into one of the
sectors that CDTV looks in to determine what type of disk was inserted.
Apparently there is no error checking in the ROM code and it goes boom.
Commodore has been advised about this and Walnut Creek is aware of it.
(That's why their current catalogs specifically say that AB20 won't work
with CDTV.)
The guys at Walnut Creek told me that future discs would be CDTV
compatible and it looks like they came through. I am using their GIFs
Galore disc right now on my CDTV parnetted to the A2500.

The GIF disk has a lot of nice images on it. If this disk doesn't force
me to a faster Amiga nothing will. 🙂 Waiting on those GIFs to display
is agonizing. Even with TurboGIF or ViewTEK.

Thanks for the info. Think they will fix the old discs? I'd be willing
to pay a small upgrade fee.

The guys up at Walnut Creek told me they probably wouldn't redo the AB20
disc as by the time they ran out the information on it would be outdated
anyways. They said any future releases would be fixed though. I think
the SIMTEL disc is updated a couple times a year so perhaps it will work
on CDTV. (Of course as it is all PC stuff whether or not that is
significant is questionable.)
