#MSCDEX poisitvely req'd?

As far as I can tell, MSCDEX is just a fancy interface what adds some commands via MS-DOS Interrupt structure…I myself only know of one disk that uses MSCDEX and thats the Software Toolworks Encyclopedia. I could be wrong, but I think that all you need is something to provide you a drive letter, and if SCSI Express will do it, more power to ya! 🙂 (All this is, of course, IMHO)… Steve McKnelly Portal System Innovations

Actually, MSCDEX offers more than just a drive letter: it provides audio access, and a wide variety of specialized functions such as those functions which retrieve the title and author information. Some of the search engines on CD's look for the existence of MSCDEX and fail to load if not found. To get around that problem, we developed a "fake" MSCDEX called MDICDEXT which doesn't really do anything except satisfy some of those picky Apps. This doesn't satisfy all the apps, but it does satisfy most of them. Jim Duke Micro Design International

MDICDEXT has been available since version 1.08 of our software through our BBS; only version 1.2.0 of our software included it on the diskette. I forwarded your request for MDICDEXT to our technical support department. 1.20 mainly has improvements to our Jukebox drivers, and the addition of ASPI support. We've only been shipping it for a few weeks now, and since the new version is only required for certain new Jukeboxes, we didn't require our distributors to rotate their stock. Jim Duke

Hmmm…I have a couple of books on DOS extenders and MSCDEX just happened to be one…From what I saw, most of the commands it provided were just pure dribble, with the exception of the VTOC & Format ID routines… Do tell about your product, tho…automatically loads high, maybe? Doesn't "automatically" load high. Very few programs do or should. But it can be loaded high quite easily. It is VERY tiny as well. Also, there is no liscense. We're working on enhancing MDICDEXT to include more of the "dribble". Jim Duke Micro Design International
