#NEC CDR-74 Drive

Called Toshiba, Chinon, Texel, and Liuski's today to try and put in order
who had what and when it would be available. Thought I'd share what I
found out…
Toshiba's new drive, TXM-3401, has been just announced and Toshiba doesn't
expect it to be shipping until February 93. Liuski's (often referred to in
this forum) is only carrying the Toshiba TXM-3301 CD-ROM drive.
Chinon's new drive, 535 series, is not available yet and Chinon didn't
expect it to be available until 1st quarter of 93.
Texel… well, if their after-sales support is anything like their
pre-sales support, I think I'd rather have my computer struck by lightning
then purchase one of their drives and subject myself to this organization.
The drive "may" be alright but they sure didn't have any appreciation for
customer care.
The Kodak support line didn't have any information on these new drives yet,
which is understandable. Kodak support did mention a Mitsumi CRMC-LU0055
CD-ROM drive but this is 300+ mSec drive, but is Multi-Session compatible.

The Mitsumi CRMC-LU005S is available now. It is MPC, XA and multisession
PhotoCD compatible. Average access time is 350 ms. You can buy it for $209

Ask for Larry Bilello, Senior Sales Representative and mention my
name if you would. Larry's provided good support and information for me in
the past. I've ordered a LU005S to replace my 800 ms,
non-PhotoCD-compatible LU002S and should have some performance results to
share in a couple of weeks, with PhotoCD, MPC, AVI (using the new Microsoft
Video for Windows) and some other tests.

Appreciate the info on the Mitsumi drive but I think I'll hold off until
the new drives come out and see how they fair. If I'm going to dump some
major dollars I'll go for the gusto and get the fastest drive out there
(possibly the Toshiba 3401).

My Mitusmi LU005S drive came today and I'm happy to report that it
performs beautifully, especially with full motion video clips using
Microsoft Video for Windows; very smooth and perfect synchronization of
video and sound. It also checks out with Battle Chess MPC and Mammals. It
is a MAJOR improvement over the LU002S which couldn't handle FMV without
some jerking. Well worth the $209, I'd say. As far as I can tell, it
performs as well as the Chinon 535 that I saw at Comdex, doing Video for
Windows clips. As soon as my PhotoCD Access software and sample disc
arrive, I'll check out the Mitsumi's advertised multisession PhotoCD
capabilities.

Thanks for the info… I'm going to call the NEC BBS direct myself to
confirm some of the info on the 74 and see whats new.
