I am interested in using CD-Roms for spoken text. Can anyone suggest a
source for inexpensive mastering? I need to make only 20-30 copies of this
item. We prefer audio CD, but is it possible to get 10 hours or more of
speech on an audio CD? One source told me that 60 minutes was about the
MAX, Is that true even if you use a 4khz sampling rate? Is the a limit to
the number or tracks that you can put on an audio CD? ecx

A couple of points of information: You can squeeze many, many hours of
voice-grade audio on a CDROM (I know of one application with over 100
hours). However, it cannot be used on a standard CD-audio player: this
compression requires a computer-based CDROM. With this approach you can
also add text, gaphics and other data formats to your production. To play
on a standard CD-audio system, however, you must use what is called Red
Book audio, which defines the sampling rate and is limited to about 72
minutes.
As for mastering alternatives, you might want to download a file called
MFG.TXT in Libr #8. It contains a substantial directory to mastering
houses and one-off service bureaus, any of whom would be happy to talk with
you. You might also want to leave a message for Kathy Cochrane of One-Off
CD Shops (71216,1271) who provides this services and frequents the Forum.

Thanks Rich, you told me exactly what I wanted to know concerning audio CD
sepcs. There is no way to get around the Red Book Spec, I assume.
What app gets 100 hours +? I'd like to take a look at it.
