In my seemingly neverending seaarch for VTRs for Toastin'…
Anybody out there in Toasterland have, seen, or used the Sony EVO-9700??
Saw an ad for it yesterday – could be interesting… One playback + one
record deck — Frame-accurate w/SMTPE, looks like.
Is this a good deal? What's the going street price these days? (Nobody
seems to print prices in the ads)…
How and how well does it work with the Toaster & Lightwave???

I would assume that the RECORD side of the 9700 is probably quite similar
to the EV0-9650, and my new 9650 works like a charm with LW.
Renders animation without a single frame controller, very fast, very quiet.
Quality of the recorded video is great.

The only problems I have seen with dropout is on some large surfaces with
lots of solid, bright red colors. I've also not had time to tinker with the
enhancement features of the machine, which may very well solve the minor
problems I have seen.

So, I take it that there are no problems with the small tape format
getting chewed up by single framing? How much do these decks go for,
anyway? What are the enhancements you are talking about?

Tape is also important in th HI-8 format. Currently, there are two
types. Evaporated metal is generally considered to have better image
quality, but doesn't stand up to repeated use (ie: single-framing). It
evidently sheds its particles with more use. Metal particle tape has a
sturdier backing and a stronger bond so it stands up better to the rigors
of editing, but its image quality suffers (still better than VHS & 3/4).
There are still complaints that in an editing environment the tape
stretches and causes sync and lock problems.

Never seen any! I'm about to go 'all the way' and get a Betacam SP deck
and a transcoder to single-frame from my Firecracker board. (actually, the
deck will be used to make money elsewhere, and when I get enough profit
from it, I'll get the transcoder, Alladin 4d, and a SFC!)

The 9700 is not suitable for single frame recording with Lightwave or any
other animation package. While a reasonable editing system, (with some
limits on audio), the 9700 is not an animators vtr, nor does it work in the
same manner as the 9650… If you need to edit Hi8 and can get a good price
– go for it. If you want to dump animations to tape – don't waste your
money.

Hey thanks for the straightforward comments on the 9700.
That's what I love about this forum — you can get the straight poop on
stuff without having to wade through vendor's propaganda…

I've got one (9650) here on my desk. It's for a review in the premiere
issue of Desktop Video World. yep, I do like it. A very nice deck for
animators.

I was told $4196 by one mail order house advertised in 'Videomaker'.
I haven't seen a price lately. It was around $5500 a year or so ago…I
expect it to be less now.
