Help! I am using a TARGA+16 board for rendering from 3DS2. I get vertical lines in all renderings. These are little lines appox 10 pixels wide that go the length of the rendering. I am using the RDPADI selection with the RDPTPLUS.EXP. I have tried 16 bit rather than 24 bit in TGA DEPTH in the INFO/SYSTEM box and still get it. Do I need to use a different driver because my TARGA + is not a 24/32 board? If so, which driver? I have downloaded the TGAPLS.ZIP file from here that contains some other drivers. Thanks for your help.

Kip, I've never seen that problem before, so I don't really know what could be causing it. Have you contacted Truevision technical support about it? Here's a question… When you save the file to disk as a 16-bit .tga file and then look at it with a paint program outside of 3DS, does it still exhibit the vertical line problem? – G

Hmmm….I don't know that answer yet…but let me render something and see if it is saved that way as a TGA file.

Dear Kip, KK> I am using a TARGA+16 board for rendering from 3DS2. I get vertical KK> lines in all renderings. These are little lines appox 10 pixels wide I get the same sort of problem too. I am using a 16-bit Matrox Illuminator board (Targa mode). At first, I thought the problem was just because it was 16-bit and didn't support the necessary number of colours to make it look right. Also, mine were most noticeable whenever I tried to dissolve one 16-bit image onto another 16-bit image in Video Post. Well, I'm in the middle of making an educational video so I'm hoping that when and IF I get a 24-bit card it'll clear up the problem. But if anyone else out there has an answer to this, it would be helpful for me too! — Steve

Hey, sounds interesting. How much are you willing to give it away for? … — Steve

Steve, Have you spoken to Matrox about this? It sounds like the display driver that you're using isn't working correctly. – G

Actually I haven't spoken to Matrox about it. The last time I called to ask them about a problem I was having with the Ilum-16 board they were just about as stumped as I was. Not very technically helpful. But I figured that I am using TARGA emulation mode and so the display driver I'm using is the \3ds2\drivers\rdptarga.exp (is that the driver you mean?).. In other words, I'm in essence using a targa board so they would tell me that the problem is not with them. Oh well, do you think all it needs is another driver? I'm not terribly worried about this problem seeing I'm looking into a 24 bit hopefully sooner than later (would improve the Video composition with 24-bit over 16-bit wouldn't it?) — Steve

My guess is that they don't emulate the Targa16 perfectly, and the stock rdptarga.exp driver is getting a little confused. Either that, or they emulate the Targa16 Plus, and you ought to be using the rdptargp.exp driver. One way or the other, it's got to be a driver issue. And yes, having 24 bits of color will allow the compositing to be completely seamless. It's the different between 15 bits (not 16, cause one bit is an overlay bit), which is 32 luma shades of each compositing color (5x5x5), or 24 bits, which is 256 luma shades. BIG difference. – G

Steven, I am using an Illuminator 16 here and it works fine, the renderings look great. I can upload a sample rendering you can try and view with the ILUMTGA.EXE utility. See if the image is bad that way. Let me know I'll upload a 3ds rendering if you want. Yann Bertaud – Product Support, Autodesk.

Hmm.. you know, I don't even have the ILUMTGA.EXE utility! Is there something wrong here? — Steve
