Just wanted to know I heard rumor that commodore Us has closed its
operations for good.!? donno if this is true but the local amiga store
to me (Software Concepts/Manta) has closed its walk in traffic, and
is now only letting people through the door on an apointment oly
basis. anyone know if the commie thing is true? I know at last look
the had only a skeleton crew left in the penn. plant.

Sounds like Manta is having some problems. I'm not surprised, many of
the Amiga based dealers are really having a tough time this year. I
hope things will go well this Xmas. The Amiga market here in the
U.S. will have to diversify in order to survive. By that I mean that
services will now have to make up for the sales downturn. Cross
platform support is also a good idea.

My dealer, who has been an Amiga dealer since '85 ad whose product line
is 90% Amiga related, tells me that 1993, to date, hs been his best
year.

I'm in Colorado. My dealer has 2 locations, both selling 90-95% Amiga.

That's excellent news! As I have mentioned before, the multimedia and desktop
video market is very hot right now, being the fastest growing fields in the
microcomputer industry. Although there is a great variety of peripherals and
software in the PC and Mac market, none come close the price/performance of the
Amiga platform. With Commodore's "rightsizing", I hope they continue to persue
the multimedia and desktop video market. I understand that they are working
closely with several Amiga based manufacturers to fulfill needs in these
vertical markets. We, of course, will continue to support the Amiga community
with new and improved products. In our opinion, the Amiga today is the best
multimedia delivery platform on the market.

Commodore US (CBM) has not closed up shop in the United States. They no
longer directly distribute product to dealers in the United States. There
are still people in PA sending things to us.

I was told today by my Amiga dealer that Commodore has discontinued operations
at West Chester. All corporate operations continue from Germany. They had
already stopped all direct distribution and are working here via third parties.

The West Chester US Headquarters is still in operation. Of course, with the so
called "rightsizing", the occupancy of the HQ is quiet small. There some new
tenants that are moving in, including SMG (Service Management Group) the
company responsible for the Commodore Gold Service program. They continue to
do servicing and parts distribution for Commodore at the West Chester office.
In fact, CBM R&D is still working hard on new gadgets and toys for the Amiga
community. Indeed it is true that CBM is no longer working with the dealers
directly. All orders and servicing are processed by distributors, VARs and
service companies like (CEI) Creative Equipment in Miami, FL (Not to be
confused or related to Creative Computers in CA), Micro-PACE and the afore
metioned SMG.

That's very interesting. It just goes to show that it's very hard to sort the
fact from fiction in this mess.

There is no such thing as CBM R&D. The Engineering (and CATS and legal
and Human Resources) people all work for Commodore International Services
Co. (CISCO) which is a seperate company from CBM which is only the US
sales company (i.e., about three people 🙂

I read the other day that Acer, the Taiwanese computer manufacturer,
had taken over CBM's European sales. Have you heard about this?
That's very old news (hit the news wires 3-5 months ago). Yes, it's
true.

Yes, that is true, but only PC-compatible machines, which will be handled
by Acer using the Commodore brand name. Amiga stays with Commodore.
