There's a program called PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) that was reciently
uploaded to the libs. With it you can crypt and decrypt files (both text
based email type messages, and binary files). It uses a new form of
encryption called Public Key encryption. Basically in a nutshell (if
that's possible) what it does is create a private key, and a public key.
You use the recepients public key to encrypt a file, and only that persons
private key can decrypt it. With the public key that I entered into the
messagebase you can add my public key into you 'keyring' of public keys,
and then use it to encrypt files you send to me. The PGP program also acts
as a key management system, to hold all the public keys you've received in
a 'keyring' file. If you're interested in this, download the PGP program,
and read the docs, it goes into much greater detail, and can explain much
better than I am!

I don't think the IRS would care one way or the other. I imagine the
NSA and FBI are quite bent out of shape over it.

The IRS is furious. They poke around in everybody's buisiness. They read
your E-mail, bank account transactions and even your postal mail. They can
do a search and seizure without a warrant. The IRS does not even need a
supervisors OK to tap in on a phone call.
The IRS is pushing hard to make all encrypted mail illegal unless they
have the codes, this includes your E-mail.

Gee… a 384 bit key? I chose over-kill with a 1024 bit key size! Just
think, we could all generate public keys and bad mouth C= on the forum
with encrypted messages, so Mark M. won't be upset with us all <g>!

I'v been reading through the PGP docs and I have discovered that
you can send a clear text message with no compression or ascii armor
and sign it with you private key. Anybody can read it, but you have
to have PGP and the sender's public key to check the signature. I did
it with this message just for the grins and giggles.
I used:
PGP -sta +clearsig=on message
I don't expect any problems with this, but if CIS does any ASCII
filtering it may not work. Just use a text editor to separate my
public key block from the signed message block, add the public key to
your public key ring, then type in the CLI:
PGP message.txt ( message.txt contains the signed message block )
