Can anyone tell me how to connect with CIS at 9600? I have just gotten a 14,400 bps modem. I can successfully link to my local CIS node at 9600. However, data appears to be coming in at about 900 bps which leads me to believe I am actually connected at 1200 bps. Do I still have that old setting active? Is there something I have to do in my profile to get 9600 to work?

Richard, First, make sure you're dialing a CIS 9600 baud number. Many of the new modems will link between the modem and your computer at one speed while linking cmodem to modem at a different…slower speed. For example, right now, my computer to modem interface is 38,400 bps while the actual modem to modem link speed is 9600 bps. Second…9600 bits per second yields 960 Bytes per second (10 bits per byte in asyncronous communications)…so if your second figure was 900 Bytes per second…that'd be about right. Don

Don, Thanks. Since I left the message I have learned that my CIS node only supports 1200 bps! This is on Maui. Yes 1200! I am writing this message while connected to one of the two numbers available to us in Honolulu. This one is reportedly capable of 9600 (and that's what my modem tells me I'm connected at). I'll know what the actual data rate is in a few minutes. Rich

I've just downloaded a file at an effective speed of 7770 bps, so I guess I'm connected at 9600 on this node. I have redialed into our local Maui node and have reconfirmed that I am getting about 900 bps (not bytes). Things are a little slow on Maui, but a CIS link of 1200 bps is ridiculous. I'm going to call CIS about this. Right now the extra charges to c call Honolulu are worth it, considering the transfer speed of that node. But I didn't think that CIS had any connections limited to 1200 bps. Wrong again! Rich

Richard, You are incorrect that the Maui node is limited to 1200 … it is a 300/1200/2400 node. I am connected to 808 528 0430. I get close to 9600 transfer rates from this node. The Maui node consistently gives me less than 900 bps data transfer. Is there a way to confirm that the 808 871 8328 is indeed operating at 2400? I don't think that it is, despite the listing.

If you would refer to cps (characters per second) it would be more convenient and understandable. Look at the lights of your modem to see what carrier speed you are connected. If you don't have lights, refer to your modem's manual on how to query it for current or previous connect speeds.

I am r eceiving approximately 90 cps from the Maui CIS node. I have an internal modem in this machine, so I'll have to find out how to query the modem for previous connect speeds.

Rich – The Hayes modem command set (which many modems use, ie, "Hayes compatible") has commands that control how 'result codes' are displayed. I believe that the "X1" command (as in "AT X1") gives the 'extended result code set' in most compatible modems. This set gives the speed of modem connection as part of the result code ("CONNECT 2400" or "CONNECT 9600", etc.) If AT X1 doesn't work, X2, X3, or X4 might work. Jeff Schweiger
