#Reflection mapping

I've been having some problems with non-flat auto reflection mapping lately. I've got a scene I've been working on since r2 – there's a cup (sides are straight up and down) that's got an auto reflect map set at about 50%. It used to reflect and it seems like it just kinda quit. No matter what I do I cannot get it to reflect anything. I've tried creating a new cup object in r3, adjusting the lights, adjusting the camera, adjusting the material and it refuses to reflect anything. I've made a .cub and it is blank also. I've also got three droplets of water that are also supposed to reflect but they refuse too. The counter top is a flat mirror and it reflects perfectly. Any ideas? I know it can be difficult with no file to examine but this is just so weird I thought someone may have an idea… Dave Mennenoh

Hmmm…sounds like a sticky one, David. I think the first thing I would try is putting a simple sphere in your scene — right next to your cup — and trying to get that to show an Automatic Environment map reflection. If it works for the sphere but not the cup, then you know the problem is with the object (or the way the maps are being applied to the object). Oh yeah, make sure there is plenty of stuff in the scene to reflect! BTW, while rendering, do you see the maps being made? -Alan Iglesias

Check out the rack of pool balls on the pool table found in the sports directory of R3's CD ROM. Most of the balls have automatic reflection mapping and when you render the camera that's zoomed in on the balls, the result is quite pretty. Check out the materials in M-EDIT for ideas….
