How is your system configured for using the MAG. ie frambuffer
monitor in dual screen, or one screen for everything? I am looking
for a good framebuffer monitor, what inputs does the MAG have?
For a framebuffer monitor you'll definitely want an NTSC monitor.
There are many good monitors available for under $1000, and that's
the next pruchase I'm making. I use a MAG for my computer monitor
(that's what it is), and a Mitsubishi TV/monitor as a monitor. It
doesn't have RGB calibration control on the outside of the box, so
it's really not the greatest, but better than a computer monitor. If
you output your framebuffer to a computer monitor you'll be REAL
surprised when you output to tape and play it back on a TV.

I am currently subcontracting for a company that has the following setup:
Targa + —-RGB———> Mitsubishi 17"

—S-Video—> AG7750 VTR —S-Video—> NTSC Sony
This setup works good because I can use windoze on the RGB and edit maps and
also see how they look on the NTSC. Having an extra monitor for the
framebuffer seems frivilous, but the NTSC is just to jittery for windoze.
BTW: Your not kidding about the difference between the NTSC and the RGB
signals!!

I think the standard setup seems to be RGB (Computer) monitor for
computer work in conjunction with a graphics card of some sort, and
the Targa (or whatever videographics framebuffer) as a framebuffer
only, going out to a deck and NTSC monitor. I personally would hate
to use the Targa+ as a graphics card (snooze…). Anyway, that's
what I have, and it works great for me. I render to the framebuffer
so I can see how it'll look, but do maps and all that other jazz on
the RGB.
Sorry about my weekend absence, I travelled back to my alma mater
(Notre Dame) to watch the Fighting Irish upset the Florida State
Seminoles in college football. I am glad I can type this message to
you because my voice is shot from screaming my head off.
On the monitor issue:
John T. has provided you with some excellent advice so I can just
reinforce a part of it. I use the MAG as a computer monitor. I am
framebufferless at the moment but I am interested in obtaining some
method to dump to tape. DPS PAR is my current choice for this but I
will need to gather more information.
Inputs for the MAG 17F:
Inputs for either 5 cable or 4 cable with composite sync BNC signals
or your standard 15 pin vga or 15 pin Mac II. There is also a 75 ohm
impedence switch for doing loop throughs with several monitors.
