Yeah, you've really hit something there. It gets very tiring when you
try to absorb all the new technology, trying to differentiate between
"a meaningful new product that will change the way we think about PC
graphics" and "some salesman blathering in my ear about an overpriced
toy that no one really needs".
My most recent strategy is to go to the show, look at the pretty
pictures, and go to as many parties as possible and talk informally
to as many different people as possible about the work they're doing
to get a feel for what the market's up to.
Then toward the end of the show I have dinner with David Cohn and ask
HIM what he thinks were the significant developments displayed at the
show (usually totalling four or five in all). He's always right
about these things. The next day I go and visit the booths he
mentioned, and I feel as though I have seen what I needed to see.
It seems to be the only way to avoid burnout. <g> Works for me.

No, just giving credit where credit is due. But I took a risk. At
the next trade show it will probably be next to impossible to get a
dinner date with you. After that message your dance card will
probably be filled weeks in advance.
Just save a tidbit or two for us lowly neophyte journalists, just
hoping for a few crumbs of insight to fall from your lips, like
precious gems in a maelstrom swell of premature product announcements
and jargon-infested press releases…
Okay so now will you promise to save a dinner date for me?! <g>

PS. I'll say hello to Evan for you. He's sitting right here. We're in
Las Vegas at yet another Comdex. And I had an interesting flight down
from Seattle this morning with Mr. Bill Gates sitting behind
me…hitting on a professional model on her way down to be a both
bimbo.
Oh how fun! Viva Las Vegas! How many people are fighting for the
taxicabs THIS year?! <g> I have always aspired to being a booth bimbo
but no one will hire me. They all want me to demonstrate software
instead. *sigh*
They say they're expecting 170,000 people this year. I can't wait.
