Hi, I just bought Real 3D 2 for Windows, when I was at Siggraph, it is really cool. I has all of the High end features of , lets say SoftImage or others, you name it, and its got it. Even if the program doesnt have something it can be written into the program, cause the program is wide open. You can customize the menus, and the display, and anything else you want. They didnt just port the program. They rewrote it pretty much, for windows. I really enjoy it, however the learning curve is quite steep. Supposdly the next beta version was just released, so I'm waiting for it in the mail. They say it renders alot faster, which is one of the main features of the new version, as well as improved menu options.

Thanks for the info. If you happen to have some more detailed info on the features list, etc. I think it would be good to see. I'd like to know what other programs have. Is the version a beta version? I know that one can *pay* to be a beta tester, is that how you got the program? I didn't know it was released yet.

It has tons of high end features, like, particle systems, inverse kinematics, all of Newtonian laws of motion, including friction, gravity, collision detection. It has skeletonal animation as well as many others. It has spline and vertex modelling tools. Yes it is a Beta version, but I did buy it at Siggraph 93' for 500$. The full release will be out around Christmas. It will be another 400 dollar upgrade. However the full release will be around 1200 dollars. So I will be saving some money. Fred

Real 3Dsounds good. I want the dynamics features! (gravity, etc.) It sounds like a good program. Tell me what you think of the interface. Is it good? Is it like a normal Windows program, or is it weird? I'd love to see it, but I'm not sure if I'd buy a beta version though… You must be banking on a good full version. It is saved money though… John

I think it is a good program. No the interface is not weird, it is nice, I guess that's because it is completely customizable, you define the viewports, the selection windows, as well as most of the icons.. I would recommend it , cause it has all of the high end features. A new feature supposedly just added is a shrink wrap function. This is similar to meta balls. However it works, by making a mesh around objects like a skin. So you could model withe multiple objects, shrink wrap it, and then you would have a nice smooth mesh. To use with the skeletal function. I'm sure that if they were to release an OS/2 version it would be really good. I believe they have an NT version, cause at Siggraph, I saw it running on a Dec Alpha under NT.. l8r, Fredrik Nilsson

Cool, an NT version?? How much? It's about time someone has a cool NT program out <g>. I want NT. With a few Alpha's or R4400's. 🙂 Or even a DX/3-99. My 66 is still too slow! <really> Promation has some form of skins feature. It might be like the shrink wrap you are talking about. They both seem to be pretty cool, as far as new technologies. They're probably not as good a renderer as 3DS R3 though (but they do raytrace). I'd love to have any of these discussed. Playmation is fun, but more like a toy compared to the rest here. Thanks for the info. Have you done anything with it, or are you just learning it right now? John

I'm still learining it! But I have done some of the things in the tutorials. I did some particle animations, like snow, and also some collision detection , as well as some inverse Kinematics, and other similar little animations. I did a cool bowling alley animation, but the version I have still has some bugs in it. So it messes up once in a while. But there is a new beta release out. Supposedly its in the mail, and I should be receiving it shortly.

sounds cool. let me know how it goes… I'd like to know how you find working with it. What other programs have you used? 3DS?? How do they compare? John

I wasn't aware they had released the Windows version yet. How is it? I tried the Imagine DOS port and was very disappointed. Is it the full function equivalent of the Amiga version? Will it run in the background under Windows, or does it take over. Please post your observations. Thanks.

The version I have is not a full release but a Beta version, however it can still do alot. Supposedly a new Beta version is out but I have not received it in the mail yet. I really like it. yeah I agree that the Imagine port was pretty bad. Yes it will have all of the same functions as the Amiga version if not more. It renders pretty well in the background, but not as good as the amiga. There is also an NT version which probably multitasks alot better. I wonder if it would run under OS/2, They say that because it is Win32 application, that it may have some problems with OS/2, but who knows, I will have to get OS/2 to find out how it works. Fred
