WHEN IN THE KEYFRAME EDITOR, I WANT TO SELECT OBJECTS TO HIDE USING
THE HIDE BY NAME COMMAND , AND UPON SELECTING THE FIRST ITEM ON THE
LIST, MY SCREEN STARTS BLINKING, CHANGES COLORS, AND LOCKS UP MY
SYSTEM. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE 3D EDITOR. IS THIS A 3DS3 BUG.

You're the first to report this, so it's something to do with your
system setup, and not with 3D Studio. Maybe if you include more
information about your system, someone else can help find the
problem. (I emphasize SOMEONE ELSE, because I very much doubt that
I'll be able to locate it.)

Just to let you know I have had that very same problem. I can hide
objects one by one but if I call up the dialog box and choose one the
screen immediatly flashes colors and locks up. Recently I have
changed video cards and I have not tested this problem again…I will
try it tonight and get back to you…as far as I can figure it is a
driver problem. What is your system setup?

MHz PC/32 MB ram / Fugitsu 1.2 GB SCSI hardrive / UltaStor 34F VL-Bus
Master Controller / VLB, ATI Mach 32 Ultra Pro 2Mb Vram 1Mb Dram/ and
a Truevision Targa 64 + card.

Your system setup is close to mine, but I have replaced my ATI video card
and can no longer reproduce the problem. See my message to Brian Rudolph
of ADESK Product Support.
BTW, how do you like the Fugitsu 1.2 GB SCSI, I was thinking of purchasing a
big drive and that was one of the drives that was recommended by a vendor.
Is it FAST SCSI-2? It seems reasonably priced for a 10 ms drive and includes
a _5 year_ warranty.
Wish you luck on the bug…ADESK is on it now…and at least there are lots
of work arounds.

Yep, I got that symptom as well, using the Vibrant VESA driver with my
Compaq laptop (running the TLIVESA TSR). I suspect it's a Vibrant
problem — both you guys using the Vibrant driver? — but it's very
definitely reproducible and a 3DS bug.
It doesn't happen for me on my desktop machine, but I'm running a
totally different video setup.

What was the setup that you could reproduce this with? We are trying to

The problem is reproducable (or was) on my 486-33, 32 MB RAM, Targa+ 32,
Adaptec SCSI adapter/drivers, NEC CD ROM, Burneulli removable drive
(Multidisk transportable 150), ATI VGA Wonder video card (Vibrant Driver).
While working on a project (didn't matter the project/mesh file) in the
keyframer and you wished to hide objects using DISPLAY-HIDE-BY NAME and clicked
on an object name in the dialog box, the screen would immediately flash colors
(restricted to maybe 10 or 20 horizontal scan lines in a couple of places) and
the system would at that time be locked up. This did NOT occur with the
DISPLAY-HIDE-OBJECT or DISPLAY-HIDE-BY COLOR.
The reason I say that is _WAS_ reproducable is that recently I replaced the
ATI VGA Wonder video card with an inexpensive 24 bit Cirrus Logic video
card and have not been able to reproduce the problem. So I would expect it
to be a Vibrant Driver problem. Also, the originator of this thread George
Mendoza was also using an ATI product (although
I have had this exact same problem using the Vibrant driver (Opta
Monalisa board (in ET4000 mode)).
Screen flashes in all colors after Display/Hide/By name.
The work around I found was to use Display/Hide/Object
and then use the H key to pick the geometry…
I figured it must be my hardware config but maybe not.

Autodesk is trying to duplicate the problem. Your work around should solve
the problem for now.

I'm having the same problem when I select DISPLAY-HIDE-BY NAME. My sceen
flashes colors for about 10-15 seconds after it is selected. I have a 66Mhz and
16 Mb with a Hercules Dynamite (2Mb) ET4000/w32i. I am using the vibrant
drivers that came with r3.

Autodesk is trying to duplicate the problem. Use any one of the work
arounds mentioned in this thread for now.

FWIW, I do not have this effect when I use Display/Hide By Name in either the
Editor or Keyframer… I have a 486/66 with 28 MB RAM and 2 IDE drives, Diamond
Stealth Pro, SCSI card, PAS 16, etc.
