I've just purchased R3 of 3D Studio. I'm interested in getting the appropriate hardware to render videos. I understand the Sony EVO-9650 and the Targa + 16 are good entry level components. Is this true, and is there a source for getting used but well maintained examples?

Darrin, You may want to call Autodesk at 800-525-2763 and ask for an Autodesk Authorized Multimedia Dealer or "Dealer(S) near you. Where are you located? As to the EVO-9650 and the Targa+ I'm a Sanyo GVR-S950 and Matrox Illuminator Pro Dealer so I'm extreemly biased. <g> You also gotta think long and hard about the Exabyte/ASDG Driver set-up depending on you final output requirements. Seriously though I'm sure your going to get a lot of good feed-back on that particular combination. If you need more information on the Matrox and Sanyo just give me a call at (414) 435-7345 or (414) 437-3898. James Murphy Consulting is located in Green Bay Wisconsin U.S.A. LaTER! <g>

I'd avoid those 2 items entirely and look at a motion JPEG product called DPS Personal Animation Recorder. You can play full frame (756×480), full colour, full speed (30fps) animations off a special hardrive and record in composite, s-video, or betacam/MII formats. All for around $2600. Get an Exabyte tape backup too, and you'd have all the capability you'd need for any type of client.
