the german company DTM (the german distributor of GVP) has released the new Amiga Software Development System CLUSTER 2.0. It is basically an integrated development system like Visual C++ or Borland Turbo Pascal. If anyone is interested in this I can get more information. Juergen Braun (via Autopilot… from Germany)

Yes, please do get more information! Is this an add-on tool or an entire development system? -Jonathan // Amiga online via Autopilot \\// MAC Quadra 700 & 486 emulation via Amiga!

Here we go: First, I do not work for the company DTM or GVP, nor I get any money from them. – Cluster is a programming language like Modula 2. It is as readable as Pascal and Modula 2. – The syntax is basically Modula 2. You can switch (if you like) to original Modula 2 language syntax but the strength of Cluster are the additional features. – objectoriented programming – exception handling (C++ has not yet!) + userdefined exceptions. This is a real help in programming (I know!). – Resource-handling, -tracking – functions can have complex return values – a string type – beside BEGIN…END you can define a CLOSE part in your program. This part is automatically executed if your program ends or even if your program crashes (to free memory or close windows for example) – Import groups, to reduce the annoying imports – constants of complex types – low level programming (registers) if you like – runtime errors do not crash the computer, even you get the source line of the error displayed – predefined procedure variables (like in C++, but you can select which you want!) – fast code generation for 68000, 68020/30/40 and 68881/2 – compiles around 6000 lines/minute – Code -> standard Amiga with fastmem: 1600 Dhrystones/s, Amiga 33MHz 68030: 13000 Dhrystones/s. The system consists of: – Two editors (!), one integrated, one with AREXX-Interface (OS 2 style guide) – Compiler, Linker, Loader, Make, around 1200 pages manual, more than 2kg – Price (Germany): DM 399.- ~= $ 240 ($ 1 = DM 1.65), student prices are available, I think around DM 100 off (~= $ 60). Perhaps you can contact GVP for more information, otherwise I can give you the address of DTM Germany. If you like I can ask the Cluster programmers if they allow to upload a demo version of Cluster (they have one). This will take around 800KB. GVP does not carry the CLUSTER environment, although I have played with it a little personally. You should contact DTM for more information. A little sidenote: All of the EGS (Enhanced Graphics System) Retargetable Graphics Operating System was written in CLUSTER!

Extremely powerful! (especailly the exception handling) If you can get the go ahead to upload the demo, I'd definetly like to see it. So, GVP is going to be the distributor in the states?

Gary is right, the EGS stuff is written entirely in Cluster! Perhaps GVP will distribute Cluster in the states if there are enough interested persons. Some interesting details I have forgotten to say: – Cluster is one of the first development systems with an integrated Tetris! – The integrated editor has the ability to "chroma code" the keywords, so they are displayed bold. One line comments "|" are displayed in a different color – compiles 30000 lines/min on an A3000 (single pass) – the release version of Cluster has no debugger, but a CLI tracer, which is a simplier form of a debugger System requirements: OS 2.0, 1MB free memory, more recommended, two disk drives, HD recommended The demo version: You can compile and run the programs you write but there is no linker. You get only some of the modules and a sample program (a start of a space game) written entirely in Cluster. The sources are distributed with the release version. If I get the permission to upload the demo version (I think during this week), should I ask the sysop first or can I upload it right away? Should I put the demo files in one archive or is it better to separate the demo into different parts (editor, samples, modules)?

I think I'd ask before uploading, just so I wouldn't waste time uploading it if they didn't approve. Depends on how big the full archive would be… (I would prefer just 1 archive rather than splitting it up.)

is this short for Robert? Anyway, I just talked with one of the Cluster programmers. He gave me the permission to upload the demo version. Before I can upload it, I have to wait for the english language report (the present demo comes with german docs). So, as soon as I get it, I will upload the archive.

Thanks! Bob is a very common nickname for Robert over here. Bob Comer — Flying high and fast with my A1200HD'030 on Autopilot! From Cheyenne, Wyoming U.S.A.
