#TV Guide: What's CD32?

Anyone else notice that on p.37 of the latest TV Guide there's a survey of the
latest games machines…except for CD32? But they think that's OK,since nobody
ever complains, I guess.

Make sure you pick up the UK edition of TV Guide … CD32 is at the top of the
list in that survey.
Why would they include one? It's not like you could buy one here, is it?
But give it a few months.

Yes, but they included the Atari Jaguar, and that's "vaporware" everywhere at
this time.
That's not exactly true … Jaguar is on dealer shelves now.
Steve: it might not be; I've been following it in the Atari support
area and there's no confirmed reports of anyone being able to
actually purchase a Jaguar yet;
However, Atari did announce Jaguar officially in the US, while C32 has
not been launched in the US yet; only in Europe.
That may be why TV Guide included them.
I saw a couple of messages there (AtariArts Forum – GO ATARIA) that
said that some dealers had received fewer units than they'd ordered.
That would indicate to me that they were for sale to the public.
I've been watching for verification of actual units received. From
what I've heard, some dealers have been told they are getting fewer
units than they ordered…but I've not heard of anyone saying 'I've
got one' yet.
In any case, there WAS a syndicated computer columnist article a month
or so ago about the CD32, so TV Guide can't claim ignorance. The
columnist may have been Richard O'Reilly of the L.A. Times. Every
Monday in the Washington Post there are several syndicated
columnists' articles on the latest (as they see it) in the computer
industry.
The latest Popular Science mentions CD32 in passing, in a long piece
on 3DO. The Atari Jaguar merits an entire sidebar, by way of
contrast.
BTW, Safe Harbor Computers (big mail order Amiga shop) claims they
expect to have CD32s for sale in the US sometime in December. Of
course, that could turn out to be wrong, given what we've heard of a
January introduction previously. Maybe C= will let out a limited
number of units in the US prior to an official roll-out. In any
event, I don't know anyone who's seen a NTSC-compatible CD32 yet. —

NO IT'S NOT! We have 36 on order and NO ONE in the "test" markets of
NY or San Fracisco has 'em. We are a NY based company and a friend of
mine works for a california company NO JAGUARS anywhere.

Excerpt from a Newsbytes article dated 11/09/93 …
About 50,000 Jaguars are expected to ship before Christmas, with
10,000 slated for the European market and the remaining 40,000
divided between stores in the New York and San Francisco areas. But
Newsbytes sources said already the machines are almost sold out and
manufacturing more, in time for a planned national rollout in
January, could be difficult. IBM is contract manufacturing the Jaguar
at its facilities in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I have a Jaguar on order directly from one of the Atari reps. I
haven't seen it yet even though it was supposed to ship Monday. I don't
hang out in the Atari 16/32-bit fora but in the Atari8 forum, which has
Lynx and Jaguar sections, I haven't heard of anyone who has a Jag yet. Do
you carry the Lynx? It's a great little game machine.

he has one.

I have seen 2 more rumors concerning the Jag. The first says delivery
on 12/15/93. The second from an Atari rep says they will ship any day
now.

On the Atari8 forum Sam Trameil said that some stores will be
getting Jaguars today (11/24) and most will have them on the shelves
this weekend. Those of us who pre-ordered (and pre-paid) will be
getting them early in December. (That's just Atari's way of treating
their loyal customers willing to pay up front for a sight unseen
machine: Make sure they get it last!)

You know what I find most interesting about the Jaguar, is I've seen
plenty of messages about the hardware… but VERY little about the
software thats going to be available for it… not as though I'm
really interested mind you, as I'm already enjoying my CD32 :^)
WE JUST GOT OURS TODAY!!! and promptly sold out of them because we only got
1/3rd of our order so I couldn't get one :-[.

Nope — not interested. I haven't seen 3DO yet, either.
Either they don't know about it, don't care about it, don't find it significant
enough to worry about it… or they are just plain dumb!
