#Gateway & 3ds

You do what you must do! I noticed others have tried the base ram benchmark
test and could not confirm my observations here. I don't know what they
speciffically did to change base ram but in my case I just used QEMM to load
more stuff high rather than in conventional. I use stealth M to achieve this
because of the several exclusions in the qemm line. With all else being the
same the startup files loading to the point of <550k base really takes its toll
on the performance ( of all three of my systems and there are all different MBs
) The most significant hit starts to occur below 420K base.
Don,
I tried to use Qemm's stealth M to free up more memory but while doing
that, my Wacom/mouse driver was unable to load high, and my VESA driver loaded,
but was unrecognized by 3ds. I should try the stealth frame method to see if
that does any better. My main startup (3ds/win) has A thru C000 and all of D
excluded as well as my system and video rom being shadowed by Qemm and with all
that going on in upper memory, there's not much left for drivers and such. I
could mess with the exclusions and other parameters to get little pockets of
memory here and there, but until it becomes an issue for me, I'd rather not
spend the time. Regarding 3ds speed, I just installed Liquid Speed yesterday
and… WOW! No more fastdraw set at 50. I think I saw a large model I'm working
on in full detail for the first time yesterday! <g>

Thanks for the reply.
In the past several months I have had to crank out quite a bit of rendering so
I spent some time tweaking MY setup for performance that made a difference.
Some of what I did was strictly hardware, i.e. cache disk ctrl with built in
SCSI drivers, video boards with built in drivers etc. It sure does save on
base ram.
I also appreciate the report on the Liquid speed. I'm keeping an eye out for
forum comments as I just might spend the money for it some day but the price I
saw was pretty high. I have learned how to be productive with box mode and
single screen so I only saw L.S. as a good way to get lazy by always using full
draw and 4 view modes all the time. In that mode I think it would definitly
pay off but with my current practices I consider it a luxury I can do without
for the time being. I have this thing of saving right now for a PVW2800,
ATVista, and Non linear editing stuff so I put all upgrades and luxury
utilities aside for the next six months so I could start saving $.
After hearing the $295 price tag for liquid speed, I was in no hurry to
get it either. At this point in time, being able to accomplish things a bit
faster in 3ds is not going to put money in my pocket, so why shell out $300?
However, I called Vibrant and just out of the blue asked if there was a
discount for pro/res 3ds users, and sure enough, they told me I could get it
for $95! At that price I couldn't pass it up.
