R3/Win/Graphite a NoGo

I am trying to run R3 under Windows with a newly installed Hercules Graphite VL Pro, Model HG720 (I'm OK running under DOS). I can get R3 to configure (vibcfg) and run only if I choose "VGA" (rather than "VIBRANT" for Main-Display) and "VESA" (for the others). But when I try to switch over to the Materials Editor, I get the red Vibrant error panel #1720–"No memory found for XGA mapping." Can anyone tell me what that menas?! I am not running EMM386 or any other memory manager, but I have EMMExcluded A000-C7FF in SYSTEM.INI.

Carl, We get the same error trying to run 3DS under Windows with the Graphite; so far, I haven't got an answer from anyone…Hercules say ask Vibrant, Vibrant says ask ADESK, ADESK says ask Hercules…a real circle. I've tried all sorts of different memory setups, all to no avail. BTW, if you set the Vibrant to use VESA for 3DS under Windows, you'll find it probably just locks your system. Using VESA with my S3 924 works fine for 3DS under Windows, although using S3 doesn't. I really _do_ like the Graphites, but right now it appears to limit 3DS to DOS. John

John / Carl: I've had the same problem with the Graphite, no solution found. Since I only run in Windows to test something while on CompuServe and verify an answer, and am not that particular about resolution for that purpose, I just set it to generic VGA and it does work OK as a full screen app. Ugly but OK! <g> If anyone finds an answer, let me know! Greg et. al., The in-line drivers work directly with the graphics hardware. This lets us get the most performance out of the card and lets us optimize based on the co-processor that may be present. The down side to this is that if Windows does something to change the state of the graphics hardware (which it does) and doesn't let 3DS know (which it doesn't), then there will be unpredictable results. Thus, the in-line drivers are not compatible with Windows in most cases, and can't be selected if your running 3DS under Windows. Since you normally don't run 3DS under Windows when draw performance is an issue (the Windows overhead can suck the very life out of most DOS apps), it should be OK to run VGA or VESA when you slide 3DS under Win. Sorry this wasn't answered more quickly by all of the parties involved (Herc, Vibrant, Adesk, the Clintons). Best Regards, Brian

Brian: Thanks for the detailed info! VGA does work under Windoze, but VESA will not, at least not with the Hercules Graphite. Unless you know different? Greg Pyros

Thanks for your comments on running 3DS and windows. I think I now know what needs done to get to work right. (Don't intend to run it in windows, I just want to see the difference for academics.) Don Landis

Thank you so much for your confirmation of my Graphite problem, John! <seriously!> It's always some relief to learn I'm not the ONLY one who's having the problem (i.e., that I'm not as iggerant as I feel at these times). I see you've experienced a problem with 800x600x24. I haven't tried that resolution yet. Hercules had a(nother) problem with that combination relative to my NEC 3D monitor, the fix to which I've just received.
