#System G
3 messages in this thread
A few days ago, I posted a message about the Sony System G special effects
machine… but I saw no response. Has anyone even *heard* of this thing? So
far, I think it's a very expensive device for mapping live video on 3D objects.
Any info or experience would be appreciated.
re: Sony's System "G"…
We demoed it here at Tape House Digital, NY a couple of years ago. From
what I remember, it did the realtime mapping w/ lightsources & shadows. It was
pretty flexable for a realtime system. There wasn't a modeler so to say, but
supposedly there were means of transfering external models (Swival 3D I think
was one) to be used in the same manner. I played very little w/ it, but from
what I saw, it had the same power as a K-scope *plus* the 3d mapping. So for
someone on the market for a DVE, it seemed like a better choice. Supposedly
Next Generation used it alot for the show.
Artisticlly, it was a great tool to build upon, especially if you come
from using a K-scope. The ability to build some primative shapes and layer
them together w/ drop shadows & highlights playing on some fancy geometry was
fun. My favorite was to create a clip of smeary patterns, "stretch" them over
time w/ dissolves, and map them using System G on geomerty; w/ the mapping
zoomed all the way up, you get these dreamy patterns on the object, together w/
ominus lights & harsh shadow! Very organic at times!
Well John I hope this helped! Just out of curiosity, why we're you
asking. I recognised you from Interchange!

Yes, that's why I'm inquiring about the System G. Once upon a time, we had one
request to implement its 3D file format. No other requests have appeared, but I
was cleaning out the files the other day, and the folder piqued my interest. We
do have a second-hand fax from Sony Japan that documented the file format, and
a sample floppy of models.
OK, I'll bite and show my lack of knowledge. What's a "k-scope"? Kineoscope?
