#Help me on Pantone

I called the service line on this question, and got no help. My question is on
the color RUBINE RED C, in the Pantone color book. This looks on the screen
and on the printer almost exactly like RHODAMINE RED. Pantone says that RUBINE
is 100% Magenta and 15% Yellow, and Rhodamine is 100% Magenta and 6% Cyan,
which are the values assigned when I convert from Pantone Spot colors to the
CMYK color model. The problem is that RUBINE, on the screen, on the paper, and
everywhere I use it, looks like Rhodamine — a definitely magenta color, while
in the Pantone color book Rubine is dark blood red. There are other colors that
look far more like Rubine on the screen, so I don't buy the argument that this
is the closest match we can do. What I want to know is if I produce a negative
with RUBINE red, is it going to match the color in the color book, or is it
going to be slightly off-magenta? How do I find this out without actually
producing the negatives and trying it? Why can't somebody look at the book and
tell me what is going on with this color? For the record, I have perfect
unaided vision and I am not the least bit color blind or insane.

IMHO: first of all, don't believe the screen. You are in an entirely different
color space.
Second, don't believe the process color mixes to get a PMS color (almost every
app that purports to do pantone w/process uses a *different* mix…believing,
apparently, that calling a sheep's tail a leg is good enough for most people).
The differnece listed of 4% is awfull small and well within the range of normal
dot gain/loss during imagesetting, plating, and printing.
In either case, whether the numbers you have are good or whether they are not,
if you really want Rubine red you should buy a can of rubine red ink and use
it. (and even there, one ink maker's version will differ slightly from
anothers).
The process approximations are only that: *approximations*. Some of them are
way, way off…and that *is* as good as they can do. Reproducing PMS colors
with process colors as another one of the "lies" the dtp vendors have been
telling us for years <g>
As a sidebar, did you know that there are different types of process inks,
magenta for instance, and they work a little differently even in notmal process
work? So. imagine
