#Like your OS/2?
3 messages in this thread
So now that we've had r3 for a month or so, I'm wondering how people
who are using it under OS/2 are liking it. How much memory do you
have? Do you find rendering and previews take longer? And is that
compensated for by being able to go off and do something else? What
is your overall impression?
I have a DX2/66 w/ 32MB and really like OS/2. 3DS renders at exactly
the same speed under OS/2 and DOS as long as there aren't any CPU
intensive background tasks going on concurently in OS/2. I did a
back-to-back test on the same machine and got the same time (39sec).
The productivity gain is unbelievable, especially if you are like me
and have only one decent computer. Guess what?, I'm rendering as I
type this!

Like it? I wouldn't render without it! I have 20MB RAM, and I don't
notice a performance hit when using OS/2. I really HATED 3DS under
DOS. Every time I'd start a long rendering, I'd have to think about
all the files on my computer that would be locked up until the
rendering finished (and some renderings took DAYS!) Now I can read
my Compuserve mail while I render in the background! When I'm really
in a productive mood, I run 2 copies of 3DS on the same machine. One
in slave mode. On the foreground copy of 3DS, I render to "network
queue" and then go on to the next piece of work. By the time I have
the next one ready to render, the slave has my first one ready to
view. No down time at all!
