Dear Brain, Thanks gor getting back to me about my question concerning problems I found in the IK tutorial. Any solutions so that I can use this tool effectively? Another question, this one concerning the Match Perspective tutorial: I sused the settings on page 21 of the manula after trying unsuccessfully to do the adjustments using my pointing device in the window. But even that did not work. If I enter the numbers in order, starting with the numbers for "Camera Absolute" and continue through "Target Absolute" the settings end up overriding each other so that what I originally entered for "Camera Absolute" ends up changed. So, unless there was a misprint of numbers, I found no way for it to accept all of these settings at once. Also I would like to have done it manually but the "suggestions" on the last part of page 19 gave me no real idea of how to do this. When I originally set up the horizon line as instructed, the building was pushed out of sight and other controls seemed to bring it back with either changed horizons and strange shapes, sizes or positions for the building. One thing that I have prized about Autodesk 3DS documentation in the past, is that the tutorials were my fail safe way for learning a new technique and re-learning it quickly when I hadnt used the feature for a long while. But – in order to to this – they have to be up to their usual bullet-proof standard and explain ALL the steps (at least for the first voyage by a user). Any and all help on resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated. As it now stands, half of the features of this release are unusable until I resolve this. Best Regards, Peter Nowell

<<Any and all help on resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.>> Sorry you are having trouble with the tutorials. I will go through the one you mentioned again and see if I have the same problem. I don't recall having a polem the first time I went through them, so I will pay attention to see if I intuitively "filled in" any missing information as I was working.

When going through the tutorial for Match Perspective, make sure to try to enter those numbers in the order they are shown and see if – when you are done entering numbers – the Camera Absolute numbers you started with havent changed drastically. Maybe they were supposed to change? Still, the building didnt look to be in the right place or perspective. I tried this carefully several times. One thought I have is, if you dont experience this and I do, could it be a driver problem? Does an update from R3 to R4 actually take care of making sure that old driver files (the ones R3 provided) are completely overridden by R4. I am only using driver files provided by the release R3 and R4. Yes, cockpit error is a possibility, but I think three times of carefully entering the numbers should be sufficient.

>> …the tutorial for Match Perspective, make sure to try to enter those numbers… << I had the same problems you did, and was unable to quickly match up the perspective on my own. This is a feature I may find some use for, but I found it hard to get a good result… kinda gave up for now. Paul

Dave; I have had the same problem as Peter with the perspective match. After entering all the numbers over and over again the camera absolute coords are greatly off, actually the dolly setting is what seems to force the cam position off. I gave up for now as well. Let me know how you got it to work. Zac (AZ-TECH) Berkeley

I haven't had time to finish the tutorial yet, but to answer your other questions…. <<Does an update from R3 to R4 actually take care of making sure that old driver files (the ones R3 provided) are completely overridden by R4.>> The R4 install will overwrite your current drivers with the new drivers that ship with R4. << I am only using driver files provided by the release R3 and R4.>> The ones that ship with R4 are the latest version of supported drivers. << Yes, cockpit error is a possibility, but I think three times of carefully entering the numbers should be sufficient.>> Right. As you say, there is a good chance it is doc error, I just haven't had a moment to confirm this. -Brian

Peter, Sorry it took me so long to do this, but I did encounter the same behavior on the matched perspective that you did. The tutorial is wrong in some fashion. Here's why: Camera and target absolute points can be entered, or dolly distances can be entered, but not both. Entering one will override the other. The definition of Dolly is to "pull back" or "push forward" the camera. Obviously this changes it's position, and consequently the numbers for absolute position will change as well. I think, if you type in all the numbers EXCEPT the one for dolly, you will get the image that they want you to wind up with. I will forward this to the Publications dept. to see what was supposed to happen. -Brian
