Well I supose I could get the student version for my department just
to learn whow to work with it. But then I would still have to buy the
other version to use for production. Unless… Is it possible to
upgrade?

Unfortunatly, no you cannot upgrade. It is designed to be a learning
experience. I guess if you got a freelance job it could pay for your full
production version.
