#S3 drivers for 3DS4?
7 messages in this thread
We will be purchasing a new computer when we upgrade to 3DS 4.0. This
machine will be made by DEC, and will have a S3 964 motherboard video
with 4MB VRAM.
Does anyone know:
Is this setup supported by 3DS4? In what modes/color depths?
If it is not supported, what are my options? Liquid speed?
Thanks!!
-Mike.
Michael,
I have version 1.0.4.c.3 of the vibrant drivers, but I believe r4 ships with
1.0.5. Anyway, this is what is supported for your chip and vram config:
for 16.7m colours up to 1024×768
for 65k colours up to 1600×1200
there you go 🙂
Thanks, Martin!
That is very happy news!! Now, I just have to ensure that DEC is doing the
hardware w/out some type of proprietary stuff going on!!

Yes, it's supported by the latest Vibrant drivers. The 4meg version does at
least 1024×768 true color, (16.7m), very well. (I use one myself.)

Very good news, John!
Now, let me ask. If you had a choice between this setup and a Diamond Stealth
64, what would you choose?

Well, even though the Stealth 64 *VRAM* uses the S3 964 chip, I personally have
never been a great fan of Diamond's, (hardware seem O.K., drivers seem to take
a while). If the DEC has the 964 on the m.b., I'd just go with that if I were
you. I myself use the #9GXE64Pro, (4meg S3 964), but it just plugs into a PCI
slot, (no video on my m.b.).

Guess I was wrong about the MB video. The board which is available to me is a
4mb vram diamond stealth 64.
