Hi all, I've installed two 70ns 16MB SIMMs to a computer that has two 60ns 16MB SIMMs and 3DS Rel. 4 crashes. Has anyone had success combining SIMM speeds? If so, any tricks to this? The system shows a successful memory bootup and 3DS shows that I have 64MB available but if I render a file that uses more that 32MB of RAM, the system crashes. Interestingly, all files that use less than 32MB render successfully. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks — Laurie

Laurie, Sounds like a bad ram chip! Try using the two 70's only. If this works, then add the two 60's after the 70's and see what you come up with. You don't need to pair the up with the same speed, try to mix the up and you might find the one that is causing the problem. I have used 70's in systems w/3DS3 and 32 megs with no problem. Did this setup work with 3DS3? Thats about it, I don't know of anything else that will help you. Mike Morgan, CAD Forms Inc.

This is just a guess off the top of my head as I've never had an occasion to mix speeds, but it may work if you insert the slower RAM into bank 1 (or 0, whatever they call the first bank of ram slots on the motherboard. your manual should be able to tell you this), and the faster RAM into the second bank it might work. The downside is I believe all RAM will operate at the slower speed. If this doesn't work, the only option I can think of is to try and trade or resell some of your RAM so you have all the same speed.
