Does anybody have a 68040.library which is more recent than September 1992
? A program I'm running is going much slower than expected on my
Progressive 040 board, and the author thinks it may be that my 040 library
isn't the latest. Thanks.
I have 68040.library with the date string 18.1.93 embedded in it, using it
my PP&S040 is very fast ( 21 MIPS / 5 MFLOPS ). I do remember problems
with earlier versions of this file.
The odd thing is that the 10/92 version is version 37.4. The one shipping
with 3.1 dated 18.1.93 is version 37.3. My progressive board works better
with the 10/92 version.

PMFJI, but, the 18.1.93 version shipped with 3.1 is 37.30. That is a 30
not a 3. Make sure you are running the most current SetPatch (40.16 –
14.2.94) to properly take advantage of the 68040.library. The newer
SetPatch turns on all caches now and moves kickstart into FastRAM without
the need for CPU or SetCPU (or similar programs).

Whoops… You're absolutely right. It is 37.30. I experimented with
different combinations of setpatch and the 68040 library when I first
installed 3.1 and incorrectly labelled it.

I saw your response on the 68040.library, and I gather that you have
installed AmigaDOS 3.1 and that the version of the 68040.library which you
got with it is 37.30. My 68040 accelerator is operating very slowly with
Lightwave, and I've been told it MAY be due to the old (37.4) version of
the 68040.library I've got, but nobody is sure. I've also heard that my
A2000 may not run with any versions later than 37.4. I don't want to spend
over $200 on 3.1 just to get the library and find out it's not the
culprit, or that my A2000 doesn't work with the latest 68040.library. I'd
greatly appreciate any help you could give me in this area. Do you have an
A2000, and is it running okay with the new library ? Do you know if it's
operating faster with math-intensive applications ? Thanks.
Something makes me doubt that the library is making that much difference.
Actually, I have a 3000 with a progressive 040 and didn't get any
apreciable speed gains from the new library. Don't have Lightwave but I do
use Imagine and a few other programs that are cpu intensive. I dropped the
init 040 program from my startup sequence long before upgrading to 3.1.
You might try using a different version of setpatch. I dropped the init
040 when I started using setpatch 40.14 which was available here on CIS.
Do you have enough 32 bit ram to feed your 040? It could perform rather
sluggishly if your using 16 bit ram.
Although I'm not as gung ho as others here are on 3.1, you should be able
to get it for considerably less than $200. The 3000's upgrade is the most
expensive and it was $150 from Expert Services. The 2000 is less than
that. Rom replacement isn't that difficult to do yourself.
