Hi Matt, I like the new forum. Just an idea: I think a section for modelling would be good. Animation also means modelling. Also one LIB where we can put in some 3D models. I know this would mean to change it again, but it's just an idea. -David

David, What you're describing is an addition rather than a change. If all that is needed is a repository for 3D models (I assume you mean DXF files and the like) I'm certain we can accomodate you.

Matt, if it's not too difficult I think a 3D modeling Section is a good idea. -David

David, You're soaking in it. Check out section 19. <g>

Hi Matt, It's great that you created a modeling section. Last month I uploaded a 3D modeler ( MODIT.ZIP) in the CYBERFORUM (Lib4). This modeler has his own format but also a build in converter from and to PLG. I would like making it accessible to the people in this forum with new converter(s). My first question : what is the most commonly used format ? The second : where can I get a DXF spec. ( DXF is a MUST ) ? May I suggest you have a look to MODIT and tell me if you like to have it in this forum. If yes, what format whould you like to have first ?

Simple RAW triangles are a common exchange format here, due to their portability and Steve Anger's RAW2POV convertor. It's just a list of vertices, 9 on a line, separated by spaces. A word on a line by itself is a group separator, used to divide subobjects and parts. There's a million flavors of DXF, it's a nightmare.

Thanks for the reply. I don't like very much triangles oriented models because they need too much CPU time for the animation, but for the portability it's a good solution. I shall try to write a converter 2RAW. Where can I get some info about this format? I have already 3 flavours of it ( in RAW2POV ). What to do with the colors?

>>info about this format? I have already 3 flavours of it ( in RAW2POV ).<< As far as I'm concerned, that file is the specification. One simple solution to colors is to put the color in the group name dividing sections of the RAW file. You can also put the color in each line, but some programs are liable to choke on that.

If you have RAW export it would be fine. If someone wants DXF there is a small Basic program that converts RAW to DXF. If someone wants POV there are a converters, too. But then it shouldn't be much difference between RAW and a simple DXF file that only contains triangles data. You can find the DXF specs in ASOFT Forum or Graphsup Forum. -David

Hi David, Thanks for the information. There will be a RAW export. Bernard

Merce, The RAW format seems to be the most in demand here, due to its compatibility with POV-Ray and other applications. DXF is by no means a must, though I would listen to the people here who use these programs. <grin> Thanks for the contribution!

Ask and ye shall receive. Section/library 19 (Modelling) is now open. Dive in and enjoy – especially through the contribution of 3D models in formats which can be used for animation!

I'm starting to stock the Imagine UG over in GUGRPA with objects from the internet with Andrey Zmievskiy's help. If you have objects to contribute I'd love to see them there.

>> If you have objects to contribute I'd love to see them there. That's the basic problem. Usually they don't want the same file twice in two fora. Now should I put it here or in the UG where only Imagine users will be able to use them (since they are in Imagine format) or should I upload here as DXF so all can use them? Or should I upload each twice? Actually I'm not asking you presonally I ask this everyone. What do you think? Matt? -David

Actually .. a one time upload would probably be more economical; save those extra pennies for Upgrades <g>! Seriously though, I don't see anything wrong with loading models here and advertising them abroad.
#404From: David HofmannNov 4, 1994 5:10 PM
And since both fora are managed by the same guys (the GGG) it's wouldn't be negative to "advertise" files that are here. -David

I don't see a problem with uploading the native Imagine objects into the Imagine UG, and uploading DXF converts to the UG here. The native Imagine objects are much smaller than DXF, so the duplicated space will not be as great. Also, native Imagine objects will retain any object hierarchies and object attributes. The DXF equivalents when loaed into Imagine will be stripped of the hierarchies and attributes, not a desireable thing. <g>

no doubt, the DXF format doesn't offer as much as Imagine format. Unless they don't say no I'll upload both here and in the UG. -David

As long as the file is appropriate to both groups, and does not really have a good, solid focus relating to either place, it's okay to upload to the two forums. We prefer to avoid duplicate files whenever possible, but in some cases it's unavoidable.

Ok when I have more time I'll send some of my objects. -David

I can get 25 megs a day from CompuServe. Wanna race? <grin>
#337From: David HofmannNov 3, 1994 8:43 AM
I could upload ~5 mb per hour. That would be ~120mb a day. hehehe -David

Snicker. If you do have large uploads, give us fair warning to make sure we have the space.
