I am looking to do a rippling flag animation. I have achieved good results in Lightwave, but I would rather do the project with 3DS because I need the rendering speed. However, I am not sure how to achieve the results I want. I have tried using Manta Wave, but it doesn't look as realistic as the flag created in Lightwave. Is there another IPAS I might try? Or perhaps specific settings someone could suggest? Thanks.

Hi Troy, << I am looking to do a rippling flag animation. >> Have you seen flagmorf.3ds in the meshes subdirectory? jonas[adesk]

Just to add a bit to what was said in COMANIM; You could either take a long bitmap and use it in displace. scale the bitmap to the correct size in relation to the flag, and generate a series of morph targets while moving the bitmap across the mesh. Or you could make a flic, convert it to a series of gifs, and make a series of displaced morph targets from that. You wouldn't need to do every frame (I feel); each 5th or even 10th frame should give a correct look. I would like to see a similar option as Lightwave's, though; it would speed things up in this instance (perhaps an AXP that would allow flics for dispacement maps; that might be something to try w/the scripter when I get it). Sorry not to reply in COMANIM, but I did say I was dropping out of that discussion :^). John Stetzer JWS

Troy The Skin IPAS used on a grid object would give you a nice rippling flag. Now a question for you: are you using Lightwave on a PC? If so how do they compare in terms of speed? ME

PMFJI, The PC version of LW has not yet been released. Last I heard, the SGI would be released first (if not already…not sure…don't follow the SGI market too closely! 😉 ) Sean // Dreaming of mastering 3DS //
