#Pentium 90 lockup

I was wondering if anyone has experienced system lock-up while rendering with
R4. I have a Gateway 2000 P90 with 40MB running Dos 6.22 and it locks-up while
rendering in field mode after about 10-20 frames. The lock-up occurs when the
red bar is halfway across the screen– not while saving files. But the catch
is that it runs fine if I don't load himem.sys. Our 486-66 slaves run fine. I
could run without a memory manager but the PAR software requires one. So I am
curious if anyone else has had/solved this problem. BTW R3 works OK.

Many individuals here use QEMM.

I use to use QEMM back in the days of R1 and R2. In those days Gateway 486 VLB
systems would have bios shadow problems when using more than 16MB of RAM
causing performance to be cut in half. That problem ended with the newer
Micronics JX-30 mother boards. Perhaps it will be a while before Intel &
Gateway get the Pentium/PCI boards worked out. I thought I could use
himem.sys since by now all the bugs should be worked out. But even on a 486-66
system I noticed a performance decrease when using the DOS 6.22 flavor of
himem.sys as compared to the DOS 5.0 version. It is curious that my Pentium
problems showed up only when field rendering, and only with R4. Does the R4
render fields option work differently than in R3?

I too, have just recently experienced P90 (Intel) lockups. I am still using R3
pm a P90 with 128 MB RAM and QEMM 7.5. I always field render to a PAR. There
doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I babysat the beast all day
today and it locked up 3 times during rendering, none at the same place. I
could stop, reboot, and start at the same frame and everything goes fine, for a
while. I did notice that the lockup seemed to happen when a process started up
(like an AXP at a certain frame) and the memory requirement became greater,
coincidentally just about exactly 32MB and again at 64 MB. Beats me???

I had some problems with my P90 for quite a while. If you haven't
removed the power saving feature (power.exe) from your autoexec.bat
then you could start with that …. that enabled my machine to work
most of the time … but I had a faulty RAM chip and it was truly
difficult to persuade the manufacturer that this might be the case
… particularly as it worked most of the time. Anyway that solved it
for me. I replied to your message as you mentioned that you saw it
locking up at 32 MB .. mine fairly consistenly locked around 10MB
memory used and also when paging to disk. Sorry, not very comforting

I found that I had 2 – 32 MB simms that had failed by switching the physical
locations of the chips. I chewed on my dealer for making me sit with the
machine for two days straight. I had new chips the next day. Almost
everything is OK now, except… I now am getting truncated files every so
often, a problem I thought was a thing of the past. What next?
