I am looking for a stand alone program or an AutoCAD ADS routine that will
convert a 3D Studio object (.3DS) to DXF for use in AutoCAD. Any info would be
appreciated.
Do you already have 3D Studio for creating .3DS files, or do you have
AutoCAD and get .3DS files sent to you?
If you have 3DS and wish to save/export a .DXF file, you can do it
from the 'File' dropmenu.
File/Save – then click on the [*.DXF] button. You'll then save your
model in a .DXF format.
If you have AutoCAD and receive .3DS files, you can request your
clients to save .DXF files as mentioned above, or a combination of
AutoCAD R12 and AutoVision will allow you to import a .3DS file
directly. AutoVision has a 3DSin and 3DSout filter.
AutoCAD R13 will have the 3DSin and 3DSout functions so you wouldn't
necessarily need AutoVision for the new release. Sorry, I don't have
a release date to give you.
The only files I found in our library are DXFto3DS filters.

The story is that we got a CD from Viewpoint Datalabs and they gave
us 5 free models in .3ds format. We do not have 3D Studio or
AutoVision but we would like to see the models in AutoCAD. (We
currently use AccuRender and Facade for modeling)
Eventually we are going to be 3DS users but would like to use these
models now.
We will be updating to AutoCADR13 soon (???) and will deal with it
then.

Pete,
Viewpoint can also supply those samples in DXf format. If you gave them a call
they would probably send you a new set out.
